Places in Mauritania
The Islamic Republic of Mauritania is in North Africa and has a coast on the Atlantic Ocean where the majority of the people live. Much of the country is within the Saharan Desert, but even so Mauritania offers the tourist a good selection of attractions.
Flights to Mauritania
The Nouakchott International Airport (airport code: NKC) is the main airport for flights to Mauritania though there are a couple of other international airports in the country too including Atar International Airport, and Nouadhibou International Airport that you could consider also. There are no direct flights to Mauritania from the UK so flights will involve one or two connections. Royal Air Maroc and Air France are probably the best choices for a Mauritania flight from the UK. Royal Air Maroc flies via Casablanca and Air France flies via Paris.
Mauritania Tourist Attractions
Mauritania’s national parks may not be as well known as some others on the African continent, but they do offer excellent chances to see native birds and wildlife. When you add in Mauritania’s World Heritage Sites, its beaches, and its capital city, Mauritania is actually a great place to visit with an interesting selection of things to see and do, despite the fact that nearly three quarters of the country is desert!
Nouakchott
Nouakchott is the capital and the largest city of Mauritania, and like many other of the country’s towns and cities it’s located on the Atlantic coast. This is where most international visitors to Mauritania will arrive and it makes a good stopping off point, but probably wouldn’t be somewhere you’d stay for the duration of your holiday. Spend a night or two and take in the city’s few attractions that include the beaches, markets, and the Nouakchott Museum.
Mauritania’s National Parks
Mauritania has two national parks which are among the most popular attractions of this country. These parks aren’t well known for big game wildlife like many other national parks in Africa are, but they are well known for their many bird species. Diawling National Park has around 220 different species of birds, and the bird numbers are particularly impressive during wet season. The park has wildlife too including primates and wart hogs.
Banc d’Arguin National Park is the second national park of Mauritania and it too is known for its bird population, particularly migratory birds. So important is the natural environment of this park that it’s been listed as one of Mauritania’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Mauritania
Along with Banc d’Arguin National Park Mauritania has four other World Heritage Sites each of which is listed because of its cultural importance as a ‘Ksours’ or ‘ksar’. Ksars are medieval trading centres and of the four Chinguetti is usually considered to be the most impressive.
Chinguetti was founded in the 13th century and has a mosque dating from around this time. The French Foreign Legion Fortress is a popular attraction too. The other three ksars are Oulata, Tichit, and Ouadane.
When Should You Visit Mauritania?
Mauritania is a hot and generally very dry country that becomes even drier the further inland into the desert you go. On the coast there is usually a little rain throughout the year – the capital city has some rain most markedly in August and September. Generally temperatures are high, again getting hotter the further inland you travel. Average high temperatures across the year don’t drop below 28C, while average lows stay above 16C.
