Nouakchott is the capital and largest city of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania in West Africa. Like most of Mauritania’s other towns and cities Nouakchott is located on the coast of the country, by the Atlantic Ocean.

Flights to Nouakchott

Mauritania’s main international airport is the Nouakchott International Airport (airport code: NKC) and there are several airlines that offer flights to Nouakchott from the UK. No flights are direct unfortunately so you’ll have one or two connections depending on the airline. Air France is a good choice for a flight to Nouakchott from the UK as they have one stop in Paris. Royal Air Maroc is another option, connecting in Casablanca.

Nouakchott Tourist Attractions

Nouakchott is the main entry point for international travel into Mauritania so most of the tourists entering the country will pass through the international airport and the city. Nouakchott itself doesn’t have too much in the way of tourist attractions as it’s built up as the economic and administrative centre of the country, not as a tourist destination. That being said, there are a few things to see and do in Nouakchott, and because the infrastructure is better here than in many other parts of the country you might want to base yourself here for visiting the country’s other more popular attractions, or spend a few nights here before setting off elsewhere.

Mauritania features some excellent national parks, one of which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, plus the country has four other World Heritage Sites too. These are the main tourist attractions that visitors come to Mauritania to see.

Nouakchott’s Beaches

Just a few miles outside the centre of Nouakchott are some nice beaches and waterfront hotels. This isn’t exactly somewhere you would come for a beach holiday but if you fancy some time away from the city streets the beaches are quite nice. Fishing is popular with the locals here too.

Nouakchott’s Markets

Nouakchott is a good place for picking up some handicrafts or souvenirs of your visit. There are several traditional markets within Nouakchott and a popular shopping street that caters mainly to he needs of tourists. Jewellery is a popular buy, or for something different how about a camel wool rug?!

Other Attractions in Nouakchott

The Nouakchott Museum is one of the city’s other attractions where you can find out more about the history and culture of the city and the people of Mauritania. There are several religious buildings that you could visit too including a couple of different mosques and the Cathedral of St Joseph.

When Should You Visit Nouakchott?
