It’s easy to think of the 1942 movie ‘Casablanca’ when we think of this Moroccan city, though in fact today the modern Casablanca is fairly far removed from the romanticism of that movie; as being Morocco’s largest city Casablanca is a bustling and crowded place on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean.

Flights to Casablanca

The largest airport in Morocco and the arrival point for flights to Casablanca is the Mohammed V International Airport (airport code: CMN), and it's located less than 20 miles outside of Casablanca. There is a train service between the airport and city centre. The popular tourist city of Rabat is about an hour away, also by train. Most flights to Casablanca have one transfer when coming from the UK, but there are a couple of direct flights to Casablanca also to choose from, with Royal Air Maroc and BMI.

Casablanca Tourist Attractions

Despite the size and hectic atmosphere of Casablanca this is still an interesting city and a good place to start a visit to Morocco. There’s a number of different attractions in the city, including the following:

Old Medina

Casablanca’s Old Medina is worth a look, even though it is nothing like some of the other spectacular Medina’s in Morocco. It’s a small walled town within a town that pre-dates the French protectorate over Casablanca and has benefited from some restoration over recent years to make it more appealing to tourists.

The Corniche

The Corniche is another typical part of North African cities, and it describes the coastal parts of Casablanca. A few decades ago the Corniche was a very popular part of the city with high class hotels and nightclubs, and even though these are still present the area isn’t quite what it used to be. Even so, if you’re looking for some nightlife this is a nice part of Casablanca to come to with its ocean front setting.

Mosques and Cathedrals in Casablanca

Casablanca has a mixture of both mosques and churches, that go to make some of the city’s major landmarks. Hassan II Mosque is quite a spectacular building that is the largest mosque in the country, and the seventh largest in the world, though it does feature the world’s tallest minaret, standing 210 metres high. The location of the mosque makes it even more special, situated on a promontory gazing out to the Atlantic Ocean. The architecture looks historical though the mosque was actually built between 1986 and 1993, and is one of only two mosques in Morocco that is open to non-Muslims.

Casablanca Cathedral is the major church, and it’s a gleaming white monument to the Roman Catholics. It was built during French rule in 1930, but when the country became independent in 1956 the church was decommissioned and has been a cultural centre since. The church is still in lovely condition though and features wonderful Mauresque architecture.

When Should You Visit Casablanca?

Casablanca has a fairly typical Mediterranean climate despite the fact it’s on the Atlantic Ocean! Summers are a very nice temperature, with average highs between 24.5 and 26.7C from June to August, and only minimal rainfall in these months. Though winters are mild, this is the wetter time of year and rainfall peaks from November to February.
