Morocco’s second largest city, Marrakech, is also one of its most popular for tourists. Situated inland from the centre of Morroco, Marrakech is a vibrant city with large, traditional souk, and a modern and more cosmopolitan new city too.

Flights to Marrakech

There are several airlines that offer flights to Marrakech Menara Airport (airport code: RAK) including both charter and low cost airlines, as well as scheduled airlines. You can get a flight to Marrakech from the UK with Easyjet or Ryanair, as well as Thomson Airways. Scheduled services are available, and usually a little more expensive, with British Airways, BMI and Royal Air Maroc, all with direct flights to Marrakech from London. If none of those fit your schedule, you may have to fly into Casablanca and book a local airline like Royal Air Morocco for the 45 minute flight between Casablanca and Marrakech.

Marrakech Tourist Attractions

Marrakech is definitely a city for wandering around as there is plenty to see if you travel on foot. It is an historic city that has its origins in the 1070s and actually still includes a number of landmarks from around this founding period. Among the main sites to see in Marrakech are the following:

The Medina

As in many other North African cities the historic heart of Marrakech is called the Medina. This walled part of the city dates back to its founding, and although there are things to see in do in the modern parts of Marrakech too, most tourists will focus their time here in the Medina, which is home to the city’s main tourist attractions.

Jamaa el Fna

The busiest of these attractions is a public square, Jamaa el Fna, the main square of Marrakech. This isn’t just somewhere that the tourists come, but is used constantly by the locals too, which is why it’s such a vibrant place. By day it is busy, but by night Jamaa el Fna really comes to life with a plethora of food stalls and places to sit and eat the cuisine. Both ay and night see entertainers, snake charmers and the like, as well as numerous people making music.

Koutoubia Mosque

Adjacent to Jamaa el Fna is Koutoubia Mosque. This is the largest mosque in Marrakech and was built in the latter part of the 1100s, and was named for the book and manuscript sellers who used to gather here. The minaret tower stands 69 metres high and is the symbol for Marrakech.

Marrakech Souks

Tourists are recommended to spend time exploring the old markets, called souks, of Marrakech. Each souk traditionally would have specialised in one type of product, so look around if you can’t find exactly what you want in the first souk you visit. Haggling is part of the culture, though the traders are said to be less aggressive here than in other countries with traditional marketplaces, such as Turkey or Egypt!

El Badi Palace

Marrakech has several grand palaces. El Badi Palace was built in 1578 and was a very large and grand structure for its time, however it is now a shell as was torn apart by a later ruler who wanted the materials for his own palace.

Bahia Palace is far newer, constructed in the late 19th century and intended to be the greatest palace of its time.

When Should You Visit Marrakech?

Marrakech has a dry climate with only low amounts of rainfall between the autumn and spring. High summer is often too hot for many tourists (average highs around 36C) but May, June, September and October are more bearable. Winters are mild and sometimes a preferable time for visiting as the average high is around 18C in December and January.
