Places in Morocco
Though it is not the largest city, Rabat is the capital of Morocco and located right on the Atlantic coast. Rabat is a busy modern city that is also quite popular for its historical attractions.
Flights to Rabat
Though Rabat is the capital city of Morocco, there is no airport that directly serves the city. The nearest point for international flights to Rabat is Casablanca, about an hour away by train. The international airport there is Mohammed V International Airport (airport code: CMN). There is also a major airport in Marrakesh, but it is more than 3 hours away from Rabat by train. Flights to Rabat (arriving in Casablanca) will have 1 or 2 connecting stops from the UK, depending on the airline. Both KLM and Air France take the same route to Amsterdam and Paris. A more direct route with 1 stop is possible on a flight with Iberia or Royal Air Maroc.
Rabat Tourist Attractions
Mausoleum of Mohammad V
Moroccan king Mohammad V is buried in this important historical shrine that you can see near the Hassan Tower. The white marble building has a deep green tile roof, and the interior is also lavishly decorated in gold, granite and more marble.
Chellah
Chellah is a great site if you’re interested in Roman ruins, not far from the mouth of the river. There are many stone walls, partial buildings and roadways still intact from the time of the ancient Roman Empire. The area is on the south side of the river, and right in the centre of Rabat.
National Archaeology Museum
And if ancient history is your interest, you should also visit the Archaeology Museum in Rabat. This museum has collections of artefacts from as far back as the paleolithic era, and you can see tools, pieces of pottery, bronze sculpture, jewellery and more. Many of the items are tied to the local Chellah dig site, but there is a lot more to see from other places in the region.
Kasbah of the Oudaias
Right at the mouth of the river is this old part of Rabat (do not confuse with the Old Medina which is another neighbourhood of the city). You can see many old houses here as well as the walls of the old city as it once stood here. You should take time to walk around the Kasbah even if you can't make it to the Medina.
Old Medina
The Old Medina is known as the "Old City" of Rabat where you can see the most unique architecture and find the best souvenir vendors. The atmosphere here is very relaxed and you won't find the loud and frantic haggling of some marketplaces in Morocco. The best entrance to this part of the city is at Ave Hassan.
