Mozambique is situated in south east Africa with an extensive Indian Ocean coast which makes this an attractive destination for scuba divers and beach lovers.

The main gateway for international flights to Mozambique is the country’s capital city, Maputo. Mapute International Airport (airport code: MPM) generally welcomes flights via South Africa and so flights from the UK to Mozambique will involve one or even two stops en-route.

Airlines flying from the UK to Mozambique include South African Airways, Virgin Atlantic, British Airways and BMI, all of which fly via Johannesburg from London Heathrow. The alternative, which may be a cheaper option, is to find a two stop flight. These are available with TAP Air Portugal, Egyptair, KLM and Lufthansa.

The Tourist Attractions of Mozambique

Many of the best known spots for scuba diving and beach holidays are in Southern Mozambique, as well as the capital city, so this is where many visitors spend the majority of their time.

Maputo

Maputo is the capital and largest city of Mozambique. This is an attractive city with a mix of architectures, including colonial. Attractions include the Railway Station which was designed by the Eiffel Tower’s Gustav Eiffel and is very impressive. Museums include the National Art Museum and the Museum of the Revolution which tells the story of Mozambique gaining independence from Portugal. There are several beaches in and near to Maputo, but the most popular spots are listed below.

Beaches and Scuba Diving

Ponta D’Ouro is one of Mozambique’s popular beach spots lying to the south of Maputo but it is not the most accessible of places. Ponta Malongane is also in this part of the country and in addition to scuba diving, the surf is said to be very good here. Swimming with dolphins is also available.

Tofo Beach is more accessible than Ponta D’Ouro, a fact which contributes to its popularity as one of the top beach resorts in Mozambique. Again scuba diving plus snorkelling are the top things to do here in addition to enjoying the beautiful beaches. This is not a huge tourist resort but has a great feel about it with a small nightlife and some restaurants.

Vilanculos is another popular spot with beautiful beaches though also renowned as this is the gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago. This archipelago has the most beautiful islands, all protected as a national park and conservation area. The marine protection area covers the corals around the islands too. You can stay here though accommodation is on the expensive side and development is supposedly limited to eco-friendly lodges.

Inhambane

The historic town of Inhambane is considered to be one of the prettiest towns in Mozambique and has a picturesque setting on a bay.

Gorongosa National Park

Situated in Central Mozambique is the Gorongosa National Park. Currently the park is benefiting from a large investment which aims to bring back black and white rhinos and other wildlife to the park, many of which were killed in the 1990’s. Visitors may be lucky to see elephants and lions here though their numbers are less than the impalas, nyala and hartebeest who, amongst others, populate the park. Although the numbers of wildlife are not what they once were, the varied habitats here should still be of interest to many visitors who can stay in one of the safari camps within the park.

When Should You Visit Mozambique?

The tropical climate of Mozambique has two seasons – wet and dry. With the high rainfall occurring from October to March this is not a good time to visit and tourists may find that many places are close for the season. The dry season, between April and September, is the better time to visit Mozambique.
