Places in Namibia
Namibia is a country in Southern Africa, just to the north west of South Africa. It has a long coastline on the Atlantic Ocean, and features great scenery, national parks, beaches and towns. The fact that English is the official language makes Namibia an attractive African country for the British to visit.
Flights to Namibia
Most flights to Namibia will arrive at Hosea Kutako International Airport (airport code: WDH), which is located about 25 miles (40km) to the east of Windhoek, the capital city. Eros is a smaller airport that is also in Windhoek, but only offers local and domestic service. There are not a lot of airline or route options for flights to Namibia from London. For a single-connection route, there are flights with South African Airways, Virgin Atlantic or British Airways. All three have a connection in Johannesburg, South Africa. The final choice is Lufthansa, where a flight to Namibia will first stop in Munich, and then again in Johannesburg before arriving in Windhoek.
Namibia Tourist Attractions
Windhoek
Windhoek is Namibia’s capital and largest city and it’s located in the centre of Namibia. Being the home of the international airport most tourists visiting Namibia will start their holiday here in the capital. Windhoek is not exactly bursting with tourist attractions but it’s an attractive place all the same and may be worth spending a day or two here at either end of your holiday.
There are several major landmarks to look out for. Parliament Gardens is a nice but small park that’s overlooked by Tintenpalast, meaning Ink Palace. The palace is the home of the Namibian legislature, National Assembly, and National Council. Also next to Parliament Gardens is the pretty Lutheran Christ Church that dates back to 1896. St Mary’s Cathedral is a more major landmark though, while just outside the city is the Daan Vikjoen Game Reserve.
National Parks and Parks of Namibia
The game reserve outside of Windhoek is a great place to see some of the country’s wildlife though there are many other parks where you can see flora and fauna too, and some of Namibia’s great, and varied scenery.
Namibia has seven national parks in total and these include the largest, Namib-Naukuft National Park which is within easy reach of Windhoek. This is also the largest game park in Africa and although it’s located within the Namib Desert there are actually numerous species of plants and animals living here including jackals and hyenas.
Namib-Naukuft National Park also has some great sand dune scenery to enjoy but for something quite different visit the Fish River Canyon Park which features the second largest canyon in the world.
Swakopmund
With such a long coast on the Atlantic, Namibia features countless beaches. One of the popular spots for enjoying the beaches is at the town of Swakopmund. The town is an attraction in itself as it has some wonderful colonial German architecture so makes an interesting place to visit.
When Should You Visit Namibia?
Namibia is a hot and dry country with plenty of desert. The summer (December to March) is the hottest time and also has what little there is of the country’s rainfall. Temperatures get up to an average high of 31C (88F). Winters are drier and cooler, so perhaps the better time to visit. June and July for example have an average high of 21C (70F).
