Windhoek is the capital of Namibia in the African content. Traditionally it is known by two names, Otjomuise, meaning place of steam and Ai-Gams which refers to hot springs. Needless to say the town is full of these natural beauties. It is the largest city in Namibia and has a population of over 300,000 people. The city is a place of glorious natural landscapes and wildlife; Africa in general is a place full of unusual flora and fauna. The city is also known for trading sheep skin where it is one of the largest industries. The city is also recognised as the capital city of the South West of Africa.

Flights

Windhoek is one of the lesser known locations in Arica to fly to but you can still get there flying from Manchester, Heathrow and other major international UK airports. Windhoek has two major airports, the Windhoek International airport which handles around 400,000 passengers a year and Eros Airport, which is also a very busy location. When flying to Windhoek International Airports, there are direct flights from London twice a week. Airlines that fly to the city include South African Airways, TAAG Angola Airlines, Lufthansa, Swiss Flights, British Airway and LTU Flights. Book early for the best rates; there is less competition so the prices are moderate. You can enter the country without any problems with a valid UK passport.

Climate

The city of Windhoek has a semi-desert type climate in that the days are hot and warm and the nights cool down. The winter months are from June to August and there is little rain during this time although the temperature is always a comfortable range, from 5 degrees centigrade to 18 degrees centigrade. The annual rainfall is very low and therefore, plant life or crops can fail to grow. And droughts occur. It very rarely will snow in Windhoek. Remember to take sun protection if you are visiting the city.

What to do

Windhoek is a place full of natural beauty wherever you turn. Try visiting Daan Vilkoen Game Park – the large nature reserve 24 kilometres west of the city and here you can find all kinds of exotic animals such as zebras, lions, antelopes and giraffes, it’s great for hikers and walkers follow the Buffalo Thorn Trail or the Bushwilliw Trail which are of different lengths depending on your ability.

In the city take a look around to see the architecture. The OWELA Museums is in Robert Mugabe Avenue and has lots on the history of the town and the history of the Bushmen. The Alte Feste is another German inspired building which not houses the national museum. The Tintenpalast as the Nambian Council and is a stunning building and an area of park for relaxing in.

Eating out in Windhoek is affordable and there are plenty of familiar restaurants at reasonable prices. Try Gathemann Restaurant and Restaurant Africa in the city centre for some traditional style African cuisine.
