Situated in Central Africa the small country of Rwanda is in the Great Lakes region of Africa. Despite its troubled past this has become a popular tourist destination and has plenty to offer including scenery, wildlife, and national parks.

Rwanda Tourist Attractions
Rwanda is now a relatively safe and stable country and over the last five or so years in particular the tourism industry has really taken off here. The country has tried desperately (and succeeded rather well) in shaking off its troubled past, which culminated in the mass genocides in 1994. Rwanda has plenty of great scenery and national parks but in the cities there are many reminders of the 1994 genocide, and moving memorials to visit. Among Rwanda’s numerous tourist attractions are the following:
Kigali
Kigali is the capital and largest city of Rwanda and it’s located in the centre of the country. The main landmark and tourist attraction is the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre. This actually marks the site where as many as 250,000 people were buried in mass graves. The adjoining museum tells you more about the events of 1994.
Butare
The city of Butare has a few more attractions than Rwanda’s capital does, and it’s the third largest city in Rwanda. Just outside the city is the Gikongoro Genocide Memorial, while the city itself is home to the National Museum of Rwanda. A visit to Butare Market gives tourists the chance to experience every day life in this Rwandan city. This is where the locals do most of their shopping so it’s not a place that’s full of souvenirs.
Volcanoes National Park
Rwanda has three national parks in total but Volcanoes National Park is by far the best known and most popular. The park is home to Mountain Gorillas, a species that was made famous by the film Gorillas in the Mist. You can actually visit the tomb of Dian Fossey within the park – it was her life that was portrayed within the film.
Visiting the gorillas is allowed but is restricted so look into this in advance; otherwise you can also enjoy camping, hiking, volcano and rainforest scenery and climbing.
Nyungwe Forest National Park
Nyungwe Forest National Park is also popular, for its diversity of flora and fauna. There are over 1000 plant species within the park, along with 13 primate species and 85 mammal species. Opportunities for spotting wildlife are good here.
When Should You Visit Rwanda?
Though laterally Rwanda is close to the equator the altitude of the country gives it a temperate climate that’s a fair bit cooler than surrounding countries. There are two rainy seasons to avoid – between February and May, and September to December.
