The largest airport in Senegal and most common entry point for international flights to Senegal is the Leopold Sedar Senghor International Airport (airport code: DKR), though it is also referred to by its older name of Dakar-Yoff Airport. For those not travelling to Dakar, the Ouro Sogui Airport in Matam, offers air travel options on the other side of the country. Senegal Tourist Attractions

Dakar

Dakar is both the capital and the largest city of Senegal and with a population of over a million it’s a busy place. Though not full of tourist attractions there are several things to see and do here and Dakar offers a chance to experience the nation’s culture up close and personal.

To find out more about the culture you can visit the city’s museums which include one of the oldest art museums in West Africa, the IFAN Museum of African Arts. Museums are also found on Goree Island. This is an island just off the coast of Dakar and a popular tourist attraction. It is one of Senegal’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites and as well as the museums it has a fort, mosque and church to see.

Dakar Grand Mosque is a major landmark, as is Dakar Cathedral, and the new African Renaissance Monument. The former was built in 1964 and features a tall, 67 metre high minaret while Dakar Cathedral also has a mosque-like appearance with the large dome and towers it has.

National Parks of Senegal

There are five national parks in total in Senegal, offering a variety of flora and fauna between them. The Niokolo-Koba National Park is one of them and it’s popular because there is such a diversity of animals, plants and birds all within this one park. In recognition of this the park was designated a World Heritage Site back in 1981. Visit here and you have the chance to see over 1500 species of plants, 330 species of birds, and about 80 mammal species, as well as reptiles, amphibians and fish.

Senegal is also home to the smallest national park in the world, Iles de la Madeleine National Park, a chain of small islands off the coast of Dakar. The islands are home to a rare bird species plus findings of Stone Age tools.

When Should You Visit Senegal?

There’s a tropical climate in Senegal and a little variation across the country in terms of rainy and dry seasons. Taking Dakar as an example the rainy season is from June to October which coincides with the hottest months of the year and average high temperatures in the low 30’s C. Temperatures are a little lower and there’s virtually no rainfall between November and May so this is a good time to visit Senegal.
