The Tourist Attractions of Cape Town

Cape Town offers a great deal of attractions for visitors, and though the city is very attractive in itself, one of the most popular things to see here is just outside the city, Table Mountain.

Table Mountain

When you see Table Mountain it’s easy to figure out why this 1,000 + metre (3,300 feet) high mountain was given this name! Journeys to the top via the cable car are very popular and the views are incredible. The mountain is also hikeable for those who have the energy and fitness level. The shortest route is said to take about two hours, but it is steep the whole way up. When going to the top look out for the small native animal, a rock rabbit locally called a Dassie!

Other Natural Cape Town Attractions

In addition to Table Mountain there are a number of other natural attractions in the vicinity of Cape Town. Beautiful beaches are great for relaxing on, or enjoying swimming; surfing is said to be excellent here.

Victoria and Alfred Waterfront

An area with numerous attractions is the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, commonly known as the V and A Waterfront. There are many shops, restaurants and various forms of entertainment here. The Two Oceans Aquarium and the Marine Museum are just two of the visitor attractions. Others include harbour tours and trips to Robben Island.

Robben Island, which is just off the coast of Cape Town, was used to hold political prisoners during the apartheid. Prisoners included Nelson Mandela, and visitors can take an insightful tour of the place.

Interesting Buildings

Interesting buildings in Cape Town include the Cape Town City Hall with its impressive Victorian architecture, the Castle of Good Hope and the South African Parliament. The Castle features historical displays, an art collection and the history of the castle, whilst South African Parliament (which is free to enter and tour) gives visitors a look at the South African political system of today, and includes seeing the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces.

Cape Town Museums

Cape Town has numerous museums. Examples include the Bo-Kaap Museum. This is situated within a house dating from 1760 and is an excellent way to see what life for the city’s Muslim community was like back then. Slave Lodge is another museum and is set in one of the oldest buildings in Cape Town, and the South African National Gallery features South African art and information.

When Should You Visit Cape Town?

Being in the southern hemisphere, summer in Cape Town is between December and March or April. Temperatures are hot though not unbearable, and the low humidity helps keep things comfortable as well. June and July are mid-Winter and though rainfall is higher at this time of year, temperatures can still be quite pleasant, just dropping maybe a little too low at night. But with average highs of 17C and lows of 9C this can be a good time to visit for sightseeing.
