Flights to Durban
Places in South Africa
Situated on South Africa’s east coast is the city of Durban, the third largest city in South Africa. Durban grew into a popular tourism destination, mostly due to its great weather, but is now a city popular for many other reasons too.
The international airport, called Durban International Airport (airport code: DUR), is about 9 miles (15 km) from the city centre. Although international, Durban only receives direct flights from Mauritius. Travellers from the UK will need to catch a flight via Johannesburg or Cape Town when flying to Durban. One stop flights from the UK include British Airways, South African Airways, Virgin Atlantic and BMI from London, who all fly via Johannesburg or Cape Town. Other flights to Durban from the UK are available with Iberia, Swiss, Lufthansa, KLM and Air France, though all these flights have two stops en-route.
A new international airport is under construction which will change the flight possibilities, and it’s hoped that this will be ready in time for the World Cup in 2010.
The Tourist Attractions of Durban
Durban is an attractive city with historic buildings and a good variety of attractions to keep visitors occupied. The city became established as a tourism resort due to its coastal location and great climate, hence the beaches and the ocean remain one of the biggest attractions here.
The Golden Mile
The Golden Miles is the name given to the main coastal strip near Downtown Durban which benefits from beaches and great surfing, and is situated on the Indian Ocean. The wide beaches in this part of Durban are very attractive, though can be somewhat busy during the peak season.
Family Attractions
One of Durban’s popular family attractions is the uShaka Marine World. This is an aquarium and amusement park with about eight rides and an aquarium which is amongst the largest in the world, plus attractions like the Dolphin Show. Some visitors will love it, whilst other will hate it, but the Fitzsimons Snake Park is interesting all the same!
Natural Attractions
Durban has a lot of fantastic scenery surrounding it so there is always plenty of opportunity to experience this. There are numerous nature parks in the city’s suburbs, including the Glenholme Nature Reserve which has wheelchair accessible trails and includes special Braille plaques for use by the blind. The region in which Durban is located also has several nature parks and game reserves.
Other natural attractions include the Durban North Japanese Gardens and the pretty Durban Botanical Gardens.
Other Attractions
Although there is evidence of inhabitants in the Durban area for many millennia, the current settlement dates from 1824, and around the city you can still see some of the more historical buildings. Durban City Hall for example is an attractive older building and inside there is an art gallery, public library and science museum to visit.
