Places in South Africa
The Republic of South Africa is at the southern tip of the African continent. This modern country borders the African countries of Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Swaziland, Namiba as well as the Indian and Atlantic Ocean. The capital city of South Africa is Pretoria. Because it was a British colony in 1905 there is a strong western presence in the country. South Africa is indeed one of the most developed of the African nations and is very diverse; several languages are spoken and British, French, German, Dutch settlers have lived there for years. Major cities in the country include Durban, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Johannesburg, East London, Bloemfontein and Pretoria. One of South Africa’s most famous figures is Nelson Mandela.
Flights
South Africa is a popular destination and there are many offerings of flights although they are not necessarily cheap as it is a somewhat luxurious destination. The most popular cities to fly to from the UK are Cape Town and Johannesburg. You can fly to South Africa with British Airway, Lufthansa, Delta, Qantas, LAM, Kenya Airline, Air France Flights, Cathay Pacific, Olympic Airlines, Air Malawi, Emirates, KLM, BMI, Singapore Airlines, Egypt Airlines, SWISS, Virgin Atlantic, Northwest airlines and more. You can fly from major UK destinations such as Heathrow, Nottingham, Manchester and Gatwick and it is always worth booking early for the best prices.
Climate
South Africa has a temperate climate, meaning it is pleasant and moderate because it is surrounded by the cool breeze of the Atlantic and Indian Ocean. However the temperature can vary if we move inland. In the Namib, the weather is dry and arid thus creating a desert. In the northwest, there is subtropical environment which allows the greens to grow. In the east there are lots of mountains and the interior climate of Africa is hot and quite dry. The mixture in the climate means that South Africa is one of the most diverse places in the worlds for flora and fauna as well as wildlife (similar to the likes of Brazil and China). Depending on where you are visiting, expect sunshine and generally pleasant breezes.
What to do
South Africa is full of amazing greenery- the Fynbos Biome is an area in the Western cape which has six floral kingdoms – in other words there are more then 9,00 species of plant life, many people in the west have never even heard of. There is also the Kruger National Park where there are lots of national plants and trees like the Baobab and Acacia.
There are also lots of interesting wildlife places to go in the country you can find Rhinos, Wildebeests, Hippopotamuses, Giraffes, Impala's and Lions. Just visit the various national parks such as the Kruger National Park, the Waterbury Bishpere and the Mala Mala Reserve. South Africa also has many animals that are on the brink of extinction such as the Riverine Rabbie – it is worth visiting some of these rare creatures on a visit before they die out.
