Known locally as PE, the city of Port Elizabeth is one of South Africa’s largest cities and it’s located on the southern coast of the country. Port Elizabeth is home to some great beaches, but also has history, culture and parks, and is a popular destination for water sports.
Flights to Port Elizabeth
Flights to Port Elizabeth arrive at the Port Elizabeth Airport (airport code: PLZ), one of the busiest in South Africa, and is just a 10 minute drive from the city. Even though it is close to town, there are no public buses for access so you’ll need to grab a taxi or a rental car. Flights to Port Elizabeth can be booked with either British Airways or Virgin Atlantic from the UK, for a 1-stop route through Johannesburg. South African Airways also has the same flight to Port Elizabeth. Lufthansa makes 2 stops, first in Frankfurt and then in Johannesburg.

Donkin Reserve and Heritage Trail
The Donkin Heritage Trail links a number of Port Elizabeth’s historical attractions, including the Donkin Reserve which was established in memory of Rufane Donkin and his wife Elizabeth, who is the namesake of the city. This is a park and monument that includes an 1861 lighthouse, while other attractions along the trail include a bell tower built in 1923 from which you can enjoy some great views over Port Elizabeth. Fort Frederick is the oldest attraction; it’s a stone fort dating back to 1799, and the City Hall, built in 1862 is another major landmark.
Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum
Originally opened as the King George VI Art Gallery, this museum was renamed in 2002 in honour of Nelson Mandela. This is one of several museums in Port Elizabeth and it focuses on art of South African origins, particularly that from around the Eastern Cape.
Number 7 Castle Hill Museum is a very small museum in comparison, but a nice attraction all the same. The museum incorporates the oldest settlers’ cottage in Port Elizabeth, that dates back to 1927, and is open limited times throughout the week.
Bayworld
No 7 Castle Hill Museum is operated as part of one of Port Elizabeth’s most popular attractions, Bayworld, which also incorporates the Port Elizabeth Museum where you can discover more about history and culture. The oceanarium parts of Bayworld are benefiting from a major overhaul, plus the attraction also includes the Snake Park where you can see many snakes and reptiles that are indigenous to the Port Elizabeth area.
Addo Elephant National Park
One of South Africa’s twenty national parks is located very close to Port Elizabeth, so easy t get to from the city. The Addo Elephant National Park is home to over 450 elephants, plus numerous other large mammals including the endangered black rhino. You can stay within the park at one of the camps, or simply come and drive the two looped tourist roads.
When Should You Visit Port Elizabeth?
Port Elizabeth has a subtropical climate so the city remains warm throughout the year. During the winter, June to September, temperatures are pleasant at an average high of around 20C. Getting into the summer temperatures increase but not excessively so, reaching an average high of 25C from January to March.
