Dongola is a state capital in the northern regions of Sudan, not far from the Nile River. It’s not a large or particularly modern city for tourists, but there are a number of ancient ruins and sites nearby worth taking the time to visit.

Flights to Dongola

The small Dongola Airport (airport code: DOG) only manages flights to Dongola with Sudan Airways, so if you are coming from London you should book a flight to Khartoum. From there you can get a local flight to Dongola. There is a non-stop flight to the Khartoum Airport (code: KRT) with British Midland, but all other flights have 1 connection. Turkish Airlines goes through Istanbul, and Egyptair has a transfer in Cairo. All three of these flights to Dongola are roughly 9 to 10 hours long.

Dongola Tourist Attractions

Ruins at Old Dongola

Old Dongola is a long-abandoned Nubian city not far from the location of the modern city of Dongola. You can see the remaining walls of old churches, and several granite columns are still standing. Some parts of the city are being actively researched and excavated, and may be blocked off to tourists.

Jebel Barkal

It's roughly a 2 hour drive to Jebel Barkal from Dongola, on mainly paved roads. Not only is there a flat-topped rock mountain at the site that stands out in the landscape of sand, there are also the ruins of 13 temples and 3 palaces built during the reign of Pharaoh Thutmose III during the 15th century BC. There are still some statues standing and some Egyptian carved hieroglyphs. Most people are surprised to learn that there are more pyramids in Sudan than in Egypt!

Nuri Pyramids

Just a few miles away from Jebel Barkal are some additional pyramids and ruins at Nuri. There are more than 60 identified tombs at Nuri, and the site is listed as a UNESCO World Cultural site (together with Jebel Barkal).

Merowe Dam

If you are in the area of Jebel Barkal, not far to the north-east is the Merowe Dam. It’s the largest hydro-electric dam in all of Africa and the water flow is very impressive. They offer tours for visitors who wish to see more of the dam.

Cruise on the Nile

Don't miss a chance to take a boat tour on this famous river. You can book a luxury cruise or just grab a simpler ride on the ferry that goes down to the ruins of Old Dongola. The scenery alternates between the rugged stone and sand, to green strips of palm trees and grass along the banks. Not only is the cruise itself enjoyable, it’s a handy way to get to Old Dongola.

When Should You Visit Dongola?

Dongola is going to be very hot no matter when you go but the summers are going to be excessive. From May until September, it will reach over 40C (104F) during the day. It will drop to closer to 25C (77F) at night though. For more reasonable weather, come to Dongola in December or January. Then it will only be 28C (82F) during the day, and a cool 10C (50F) in the evenings.
