Sudan is a huge country, the tenth largest in the world and the largest in Africa. Being so large Sudan offers great variety for the tourist, but with the continued civil wars that the country is living through there are only really a few places that you should consider visiting for safety reasons.

Flights to Sudan

Khartoum, the capital city, is the main travel hub for flights to Sudan, though the cities of Juba and Port Sudan also have airports that accommodate occasional international flights to Sudan (usually from other countries in Africa rather than from overseas). The Khartoum Airport (airport code: KRT) is located close to the city, and there are taxis and minibuses offering service to the city centre. There are direct flights to Sudan from the UK on British Midland, but all other flights have 1 connection. British Airways and Egyptair stop in Cairo; Turkish Airlines has a transfer in Istanbul, and Royal Jordanian travels through Amman.

Sudan Tourist Attractions

For some years now non-essential travel to Sudan has been advised against for tourists so although the size of this country, its diversity, and its people make this an attractive tourist destination on paper, the risk to tourists is really too great to consider coming here for a safe and relaxing holiday. If you feel you really must visit Sudan then there are three areas that are considered a little safer than others: Khartoum, Omdurman, and the Northern State.

When there finally is peace in Sudan here are some of the best attractions of this north east African country…

Khartoum

Khartoum is the capital of Sudan and has a number of attractive features and attractions. The city it set upon the confluence of the Blue and White Nile Rivers at the point where they meet to become the River Nile. Alongside the Blue Nile part of the city is Nile Street and this is one of Sudan’s popular tourist spots. The street is lined with historic colonial buildings and includes the Presidential Palace and the Palace Museum. While the Palace is not accessible to the public the adjoining Palace Museum tells you more.

Another museum on this street worth visiting is the largest in Sudan, the National Museum of Sudan. Here you can find out more about the country’s history and people. Two of Khartoum’s other popular tourist attractions include the Souq Arabi marketplace and the Khartoum Old Mosque.

Port Sudan

Port Sudan, as the name suggests, is a major port on the Red Sea. This is a popular starting place for diving excursions, including trips in live-aboard boats from which you can enjoy some of the excellent diving and snorkelling opportunities of the Red Sea.

When Should You Visit Sudan?

Putting the civil war troubles aside Sudan is generally a hot country so for warm weather you could visit throughout the year. Being such a large country there are obviously climatic differences from one end to the other; this ranges from arid to tropical, and so rainfall can greatly differ too.
