Situated just north east of the centre of Sudan is the capital city, Khartoum. Located where the Blue and White Nile Rivers meet, Khartoum is divided into three cities and has a good assortment of tourist attractions.

Flights to Khartoum

Most international flights coming into Sudan will arrive at the Khartoum Airport (airport code: KRT) located near the capital, in the Al-Amarat neighbourhood. Travellers can take private taxis or public minibuses from the airport directly into the city. There is one airline that offers a non-stop flight to Khartoum from the UK, and that's British Midland. The rest all have 1 transfer in their route. Flights to Khartoum with British Airways will stop in Cairo, and Qatar Airways transfers in Doha. Turkish Airlines also offers flights to Khartoum with a connection in Istanbul.

Khartoum Tourist Attractions

Khartoum was established at the point where the Blue and White Nile Rivers meet and become the Nile River. With these three rivers the natural growth of Khartoum was into three distinct areas, Khartoum proper, Omdurman, and Bahri, also known as Khartoum North. The latter is mostly industrial and residential so doesn’t offer too much in the way of tourist attractions, but the other two cities do.

Nile Street

Many of Khartoum’s most popular attractions on Nile Street and the street itself is an attraction too. It’s a mostly tree-lined street so can be a pleasant walk on a hot day as you’re shaded by the branches of the trees overhead. On one side of the street is the Blue Nile while on the other are numerous colonial buildings. Many of these could do with a complete overhaul but at least you can get an idea of the architecture.

The Presidential Palace is here on Nile Street. While this would be a tourist attraction you’re not allowed to go inside or even walk past it. Instead you will be asked to walk around the back of the palace to get any further along Nile Street. If you’re interested in finding out more about this shrouded place you can visit the Palace Museum next door.

Khartoum and Nile Street is also home to the National Museum of Sudan, the largest museum in the country. This museum will give visitors insight into the country’s history and includes an impressive exhibit of two Egyptian temples.

Souq Arabi

Meaning the Arabian Market, Khartoum’s Souq Arabi is the place to come for shopping when in Khartoum! This is the bustling commercial heart of the city and is generally packed full of people but gives you a great opportunity to see the locals going about their everyday lives.

Souq Omdurman

Another popular souq is in the Omdurman part of Khartoum. This is supposedly one of the largest markets in Africa and is popular with tourists because of its excellent handicrafts section.

A couple of kilometres from here is another top tourist attraction, Sufi Dancing. Also known as the whirling dervishes this takes place every Friday except during Ramadan, where you can witness the dances and vibrant atmosphere.

When Should You Visit Khartoum?

Khartoum has a hot and arid climate so it remains hot throughout the year. Only July, August and September really have any rainfall to speak of, but even then it’s only a little. The average high temperature ranges from 31C to nearly 42C and if you don’t like extreme heat it may be best to avoid the months of April to October.
