Officially known as the Kingdom of Swaziland this small country is situated in the south of Africa and is entirely landlocked. Though only small compared to many other countries in Africa, Swaziland has lots to offer including some great game reserves.

Flights to Swaziland

The Matsapha Airport (airport code: MTS) is the only airport in Swaziland, and so all flights to Swaziland will arrive here. The airport is literally right outside the main industrial town of Swaziland, Manzini, however, this is due to be replaced by a new airport over the next year or so, called the Sikhuphe International Airport. From the UK there are options with several airlines, including those with a one or two stop flight to Swaziland. South African Airways, Virgin Atlantic Airways and British Airways are the best choice for a one stop flight to Swaziland, or if you don’t mind a second stop you can fly with Emirates, Lufthansa and Egyptair.

Swaziland Tourist Attractions

For most tourists Swaziland appeals as a destination where you can visit game reserves and national parks, and these are certainly in abundance in this small country! Swaziland doesn’t actually offer much more than these natural attractions, but the friendly people always ensure that every visitor gets a warm welcome in Swaziland!

Swaziland’s Cities

Swaziland has several large cities and though these aren’t the main attraction of a visit here, there are some things to see and do all the same. The administrative capital and largest city of Swaziland is Mbabane, but it’s the royal and legislative capital, Lobamba, that offers more.

Lobamba is the home of the Swazi Parliament and impressive buildings include the Royal Kraal and the Embo State Palace. The Swazi National Museum is also here, and outside the city centre is one of the places in Swaziland where you can see wild animals, at the Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary.

Manzini

Manzini is a better known city in Swaziland as it’s home to the country’s international airport. The city is also a popular gateway to Hlane Royal National Park, making this a good location to base yourself. In the city itself you’ll find numerous restaurants, shops, hotels, and bars, while the Hlane Royal National Park is top rated for tracking elephants and rhinos on foot.

Malolotja Nature Reserve

The Malolotja Nature Reserve is also highly rated among tourists and it features a spectacular mountain park and miles of unspoilt wilderness. If you like hiking then this is ‘the’ place to come for hiking in Swaziland where along your way you could see the highest waterfall in the country and many different habitats. If you prefer to get really remote you can travel by 4x4.

When Should You Visit Swaziland?

Temperatures in Swaziland don’t vary too much from spring to summer to autumn, so when deciding the best time to visit you may like to consider avoiding the rainy season, which is during the summer. Average temperatures in the spring (September to October) are 18C, while in the autumn (April to May) the average is just one degree cooler. The summer average is 20C, but temperatures can vary across the country with some places reaching daytime highs of up to 40C.
