Flights to Dar es Salaam
Places in Tanzania
Dar es Salaam is the largest city in Tanzania, though not actually the capital. While you may come to Tanzania to see the wildlife, the cities do offer some attractions too, and this includes Dar es Salaam.
Flights to Dar es Salaam
Flights to Dar es Salaam will arrive at the Julius Nyerere International Airport (airport code: DAR). Named after the first president of Tanzania, the airport is just 6 miles from the city centre and accessible by taxi, or make use of one of the many hotel shuttles. There are indirect flights to Dar es Salaam from the UK with one or two connections. Egyptair flies via Cairo while Qatar Airways comes via Doha. Emirates, Ethiopian Airlines, KLM, Virgin Atlantic Airways, British Airways, or South African Airways also offer one stop flights to Dar es Salaam.
Dar es Salaam Tourist Attractions
Kaole Ruins
About an hour north of the city is the town of Bagamoyo, where there are a number of historic sites. In particular, the 13th-century Kaole mosque ruins are worth a visit. There are also old mission buildings, churches and even a German garrison building. Most of these date to the early 19th century.
Dar es Salaam Marine Reserve
The marine park makes a great day-trip from the city, and it is made up of several small coastal islands. You can go snorkelling, swimming or just enjoy the sandy beaches for some sunbathing. The lagoon on Bongoyo Island is the place to go to see young sharks too.
Makumbusho Village Museum
See reconstructions of the various kinds of homes traditionally built by the many tribes of Tanzania at the Makumbusho Village Museum. Eighteen different styles of buildings are part of the village, as well as many other pieces of artwork from each culture. On Thursdays and Sundays, performers put on a dance show through the village, making these good days to visit.
National Museum
You can see the history of Dar es Salaam as well as the rest of Tanzania at the National Museum. Artefacts from hundreds of years ago (the earliest being 9th century) show how the many cultures have influenced life in the area. The colonial period, slave trade and other important times are all on display. Next door to the museum are the Botanical Gardens, another place you should think about visiting while you are here in Dar es Salaam.
Markets
There are several outdoor market places in Dar es Salaam, but the biggest is Kariakoo. It's extremely noisy, crowded, hectic and basically an experience in itself. Don't carry large sums of cash with you, as there can be pickpockets about in the crowds. Prices are always higher for tourists than locals, so don't be shocked if a vendor offers you something at a higher price than someone else. You're still expected to haggle, of course. Kariakoo is open all week long, and located to the west of the city centre. After Kariakoo, the Ilala market is the next popular, specifically for second-hand goods and street food.
When Should You Visit Dar es Salaam?
It is always hot in Dar es Salaam but you can plan your trip for the most pleasant months by avoiding the rainy periods. The best times are between June and August when the highs are only 29C (84F). Between December and April, it's about 3 degrees warmer, and the rainy period is from March until May.
