Tanzania Tourist Attractions

Wildlife Safaris

One of the biggest tourist attractions in Tanzania is the wildlife safari. Most parks will offer you the chance to see the main game animals of the region, like the lion, zebra, hippo, rhino or giraffe. Certain parks may have larger populations of specific animals, so check into them if you are intent on seeing particular animals. The largest park is the Serengeti National Park, particularly during the massive wildebeest migration. Being a popular park, it can also be crowded though. You can also try the less visited ones to see just as many animals, such as the Ruaha National Park, Selous Game Reserve, Tarangire National Park or the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

Mount Kilimanjaro

If you've ever dreamed of climbing a mountain, then a visit to Mount Kilimanjaro is for you. It's one of the few major mountains that you can hike up without having to do any difficult rock-climbing. The summit is just over 19,000 feet above sea level and most trips will take between 5 and 8 days (depending on the route). Go with a tour group that has porters to carry the extra gear, so you can really enjoy the scenery as you climb.

Isimila Gorge

The ancient history in Tanzania is unmatched anywhere in the world. South of Iringa is the Isimila Gorge, where the largest finds of stone age tools have been discovered. It's a fairly small tourist spot but worth the trip. There are some amazing natural stone pillars in the gorge as well as displays of the artefacts found in the area. Some of the paths are quite rocky so be prepared when you plan your visit. There is a guide on site, and there is a fee to enter.

Mafia Island Marine Park

Don't forget the ocean coast of Tanzania. The small island of Mafia has a protected marine area, containing a coral reef, lagoons and coastal forests. You're welcome to stay on land, but the real sights are underwater. Snorkelling and scuba diving are the sports of choice, and you can get the equipment (with some training) at the dive centre of the park.

When Should You Visit Tanzania?

The climate can vary around the country, but generally the temperatures are hot and there are 2 rainy seasons you may want to plan around. December to February can reach over 35C during the day, making them a little less appealing for a tourist. The most rain comes between March and May. It can be more than inconvenient, as many roads will become impassable. So the best time to travel to Tanzania is June, July or August. That's actually the coolest time (around 27C), and between the periods of rain.
