Places in Tanzania
The region of Kilimanjaro is a very popular destination in Tanzania, mainly because of the famous mountain and the amazing scenery. The nearest town where most people stop first is Moshi, but it’s Kilimanjaro mountain that is the main attraction.
Flights to Kilimanjaro
The Kilimanjaro International Airport (airport code: JRO) is a fairly small airport serving the area around Mount Kilimanjaro. Though it is a small airport, there are many major airlines that offer international flights to Kilimanjaro from the UK. You can fly with Virgin Atlantic or Kenya Airways for a flight that will transfer in Nairobi. Ethiopian Airlines and British Midland have another route, with both airlines travelling through Addis Ababa for their flights to Kilimanjaro.
Kilimanjaro Tourist Attractions
Mount Kilimanaro
This is the main attraction for the area, and one that can easily take up your entire visit if you choose to climb to the top. It is one of the few mountains in the world that can be scaled without any rock-climbing or special equipment. You can basically hike right to the top, as long as you are in reasonably good shape. The peak is 5,895m (19,340 feet) above sea level, so it's still a respectable climb. There are 6 official routes, with varying degrees of difficulty and different final summit points. Depending on your specific trip or tour group, it will take between 4 and 8 days to get to the top and back.
Kilimanjaro National Park
The area all around the mountain itself is a national park, and home to elephants, some species of antelope, monkeys, buffalo, leopards, and hundreds of bird species. If you are not planning on going up the mountain, you can still explore the park on its own to see a little of Tanzania’s scenery and wildlife. The Chala crater lake is a very nice spot you should try to see while in the park.
Moshi
Other than all your basic accommodations and tour offices, there isn't a lot to do right in Moshi itself. You can get everything you need while you are there though. You should try to check out the Kiboriloni open-air market if you get a chance.
Arusha National Park
To see different landscape, you can head to the west to the Arusha National Park which is made up of more grasslands than the mountainous Kilimanjaro Park. Here you may see zebra, giraffe, the occasional elephant and leopard. There are also some interesting shallow lakes within the park that are usually heavily populated with wading birds. For a little bit more climbing, you can hike up Mount Meru which will give you an unparalleled view of Mount Kilimanjaro from its summit.
When Should You Visit Kilimanjaro?
It is warm year-round in Kilimanjaro but some months are cooler than others. Regardless of when you travel, remember that it will get quite a bit cooler as you climb the mountain so you will still need to pack appropriate clothes no matter when you travel. But down at ground level, it will reach 33C (91F) from October until the end of March. For a little more comfortable weather, plan to come to Kilimanjaro in either June or July when the daily highs are only 25C (77F). Rain can be a little heavy in April or May as well.
