Located in the Indian Ocean, just off the mainland of Eastern Africa, is the archipelago of Zanzibar. Comprising two main islands and a number of much smaller ones, Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania. Zanzibar is a lovely place that features beautiful scenery as well as history and culture.

Flights to Zanzibar

The Zanzibar International Airport (airport code: ZNZ) is the main airport for the island, and is about 4 miles away from the city of Stone Town. There are no non-stop flights to Zanzibar from the UK, but a few 1-stop choices available. Kenya Airways and Virgin Atlantic both stop in Nairobi, and Ethiopian Airlines makes a connection in Addis Ababa. A 2-stop flight to Zanzibar with Egyptair will go through Cairo as well as Nairobi. British Airways is another choice, stopping in Cairo and Addis Ababa. The average flight to Zanzibar will take between 12 and 20 hours from the UK.

Zanzibar Tourist Attractions

Zanzibar is an archipelago so rather than being just one island there are numerous islands. The main island is officially called Unguja but informally it’s known as Zanzibar. The other large island is Pemba, and though this isn’t visited as often as Zanzibar itself, Pemba does have some attractions.

Pemba Island

Zanzibar is definitely the top tourist destination, but Pemba is becoming more popular as tourists looking for the quieter life discover its advantages. Pemba for example is becoming quite the diving destination as it has untouched coral and abundant marine life, plus steep drop-offs. It’s also a great place for fishing, and on dry land there are archaeological sites to explore including the remains of a 14th century settlement, the Ndagoni ruins.

Zanzibar Island

Stone Town is the historic centre of Zanzibar City and one of the island’s top tourist attractions. It’s been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its cultural importance because of its melting pot of cultures that have lived here together over the years. Much of the architecture is from the 19th century and has a mainly Swahili style, but with elements of European, Moorish, Arabian, Persian and Indian architecture too.

The House of Wonders is one of the main landmarks and it was built in 1883 as the Sultan’s residence. Today it houses a museum. Next door the Old Fort is another major landmark, built in the 17th century, while the mosques, cathedrals and churches really display the diversity of the cultures that have lived in Zanzibar. St Joseph’s Cathedral is amongst these.

Nungwi

Away from the larger town, Zanzibar has some lovely small villages and great beaches to explore. Nungwi is a small resort town at the northern tip of Zanzibar. Watch the fishermen set out at sunset, and visit the aquarium where you can see the sea turtle conservation area.

Kendwa

Kendwa is just a couple of miles along the coast from Nungwi and because it’s not as easily accessible this is a great place to come to relax on the beach. You can take a boat trip from Nungwi, and come off the coast diving.

When Should You Visit Zanzibar?

Being near the equator the temperatures in Zanzibar don’t vary much across the year, changing by just a few degrees between summer and winter. The main element to plan your trip around then is the rainfall and this is lowest in the winter months, from June to September. Then the average highs are around 29C, so it’s hot without being unbearable. Temperatures peak December to March and rainfall really peaks from March to May.
