Togo Tourist Attractions
Lome Grand Market
The Lome Grand Market is a grand shopping experience in the capital, with 3-stories of space that covers a full city block! Locally, it's called the Grande Marche (French for Big Market) and it can be very busy with bustling customers. Vendors will be selling anything and everything, including fresh fruits and vegetables along with clothing, carvings and other souvenirs.
Akodessewa Fetish Market
You will almost certainly find that the Akodessewa market near Lome is nothing like you've ever seen. It specializes in Voodoo fetishes and other magical objects. Skulls, amulets, carved bones and herbal mixtures are all for sale. Not for the faint of heart but definitely the place for an unusual souvenir.
Togo National Museum
Also in Lome, the Togo National Museum holds the history for the country and exhibits include cultural, artistic and historical artefacts. It's not a large facility but admission is free, so it’s worth a visit.
Lome Cathedral
Near the Grand Market is the Lome Cathedral. It's a large red and white stuccoed building that dates from just before WWI. It can be busy on Sundays, so you might want to see it during the week.
Koutammakou
In the northern part of Togo, you can get off the beaten path (literally) to see a village of mud-tower houses of the Battamariba people. It's a chance to see the real Togo away from the big city, and tourist areas. It's not a casual trip, and you'll need a guide to help you find your way along the dirt roads. Koutammakou is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, though it's not developed for tourists.
Beaches
There are several sandy beaches along the coast of southern Togo, though the waters can be too rough for swimming. The beaches still make a lovely place for a walk when you want to get out of the city.
When Should You Visit Togo?
From November until April, weather in Togo is very warm. Average highs during the day are around 31C (90F). It cools down slightly during the summer months, particularly in July and August. Then the days are around 26C (81F) instead. Right before the cooler months, the rainfall is quite heavy, so a trip in June would be a wet one. August would be the most pleasant, all around.
