Lome is the capital city of Togo, located at the southern end of this small narrow West African country. It's the largest city, and offers the best services for tourists, though the amenities are limited. Lome is on the coast, so there are some nice views and beaches outside the city too.

Lome Tourist Attractions

Lome Grand Market

One of the biggest attractions in Lome is the Grand Market. Unlike many African markets, this one is indoors. The building takes up a full block and is 3 stories high. It's busy, loud and you can find nearly anything for sale there. Not only are there many vendors with handcrafted souvenirs such as carvings, baskets and clothing, you can also find people selling all kinds of fresh fruit and vegetables too. Plan on doing some haggling when you purchase anything to get a better price than the first one stated. You can find the Grand Market right in the centre of the city, near the cathedral.

Togo National Museum

It's not particularly large or fancy but the Togo National Museum does have some nice exhibits on the history, culture and art of Togo. It's free to enter and should be visited if you are in the area. All of the display information is in French.

Lome Cathedral

If you are visiting the Grand Market, stop by the next door Lome Cathedral while you are there. It was built early in the 1900s, right before the start of WWI. It has two tall spires, and the outer facade is a crisp white and red stucco.

Akodessewa Voodoo Market

That's right, an entire market dedicated to Voodoo fetishes, products, charms and amulets. You'll see some pretty unique souvenirs, like animal skulls, skins, bone carvings, medicine bags and even Voodoo dolls (these are mainly for the tourists). Careful what you buy, you may have trouble getting it through customs when you get back home!

Local Beaches

There are several white sand beaches near the city. Lined with palm trees, they are just as beautiful as any Caribbean beach. Lome Beach and Coconut Beach are best for swimming and water sports, and there are often live music performances on the beach too.

When Should You Visit Lome?

Most of the year is hot in Lome, roughly from November until April will have 31C (90F) daytime highs. The temperatures drop down to a more comfortable 26C (81F) during July and August, making those the better months to travel. June and July are also the rainiest months (by far) which can interfere with sight-seeing. So really, August stands out as the best month to come to Lome if you want to avoid the heat.
