Situated in Central Africa Zambia is most famous for the spectacular Victoria Falls, one of the world’s greatest waterfalls. Though a poor nation, Zambia is becoming more and more popular with tourists who come here to see the wonderful scenery and to take part in the great safari opportunities.
You wouldn’t usually recommend visiting a country during the rainy season, but to see Victoria Falls at their best, Zambia’s rainy season is the best time to come (see the weather section below)! There’s so much more water tumbling over the falls at this time of year that it makes the views even more awe inspiring.
Livingstone
The closest town to Victoria Falls on the Zambia side is Livingstone. Named for Dr David Livingstone, who was the first non-native person to set eyes on Victoria Falls, the town is the best place to stay and is know as the gateway to the falls. You can use Livingstone as a base and make use of the many different tour companies who operate from here, offering trips to the falls, as well as boat trips to Livingstone Island, trips down the Zambezi, or elephant safaris.
South Luangwa National Park
Because Zambia is quieter than some other popular African countries you can enjoy its numerous national parks in relative peace. South Luangwa National Park is thought by many to be the best in Zambia as it has a very large population of animals. On safari here you might see leopards, giraffes, hippos, zebras, elephants, buffalo and more, along with about 400 different bird species too. Not many national parks allow night time safaris but this is one of them!
Lusaka
If you’re arriving in Lusaka on a flight to Zambia you should spend a few days exploring the country’s capital city. The markets are very popular with tourists as they offer many opportunities to buy some great items at low prices. Soweto Market is one of the largest and best known, or if you prefer you can shop in the comfort of a shopping mall.
Flights to Zambia
There are several airports in the country that accept international flights to Zambia, but the main entry point for tourists is the capital city of Lusaka. Other cities such as Livingstone and Mfuwe also have regional airports. In Lusaka, the airport is the Lusaka International Airport (airport code: LUN) and is approximately 15 miles (25km) from the city. Flights to Zambia are available with major carriers with either one or two connections from the UK. Ethiopian Airlines has one transfer stop in Addis Ababa, and South African Airways connects in Johannesburg. Victoria Falls Victoria Falls is undoubtedly the most famous and most visited natural attraction in Zambia. Divided between Zambia and the neighbouring country of Zimbabwe, Victoria Falls is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.
