Flights to Livingstone
Places in Zambia
Named after the Scottish explorer, David Livingstone, the town of Livingstone is one of the top tourist destinations in the southern African country of Zambia. Livingstone is the gateway to the Victoria Falls but also gives tourists access to many other attractions too.
Flights to Livingstone
Most flights to Livingstone arrive from Johannesburg, but you can get a connecting flight from London with several airlines. Livingstone Airport (airport code: LVI) is expanding service for European flights to Livingstone in the future. Virgin Atlantic, South African Airways and British Airways all have a flight to Livingstone with a single connection in Johannesburg. Egyptair makes a transfer in Cairo before Johannesburg, for a 2-stop route. The 1-stop flights are around 15 hours long, whereas the 2-stop options are closer to 20.
Livingstone Tourist Attractions
Obviously the main reason for most tourists to visit Livingstone is to see Victoria Falls, and there’s no doubt that this should be top of your list of things to do. Livingstone has its own attractions too though, and it’s a lovely little city to enjoy for a couple of days.
Victoria Falls
Just 6 miles from the historic city of Livingstone is Victoria Falls. This is one of the world’s most spectacular natural attractions and has rightly been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The falls are the largest in the world, standing 108 metres high, and are one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. During peak flows Victoria Falls earns its local name ‘the smoke that thunders’ as the mist from the crashing water rises so high into the sky that it looks like smoke, and of course the water makes a truly thundering noise as it falls. Outside of the peak flow times the water is calmer and almost gently cascades over the falls without making a substantial amount of mist. The best time to visit really, is in between these two periods.
Victoria Falls Bridge
Victoria Falls is shared between Zambia and Zimbabwe as the Zambezi River is the border between the two. Victoria Falls Bridge is another popular attraction close to Livingstone, and there is a border control at either end. The bridge crosses the Second Gorge of the falls, and is not just a pedestrian bridge, it also carries road vehicles and trains and has stood here since 1905.
Museums in Livingstone
Along the Zambezi River is one of Livingstone’s museums, the Victoria Falls Field Museum. This is the place to come if you’re interested in the geology and formation of the falls, and it also displays exhibits on the history of the region.
Livingstone Museum is another and it too has some exhibits focused on the history and prehistory of the region as well as an emphasis on the life of David Livingstone, including photographs, possessions and personal items.
Mosi-ao-Tunya National Park
Victoria Falls is within the Mosi-ao-Tunya National Park, just outside Livingstone, where you can see more than just the falls. The national park also has a wildlife section where you can go on safari and see the animals which include giraffes, zebras, and buffalos plus sometimes hippos and crocodiles.
When Should You Visit Livingstone?
For dry and comfortable weather you should visit Livingstone in the winter months (May to August). During this time average high temperatures are between 25.5 and 28.4C, but in the summer months they peak up to 34C which may be too hot for some. The rainy season starts in October and reaches its peak between December and March, and so the river peaks around April when the most spectacular flow will be seen at Victoria Falls.
