Flights to Mfuwe
Places in Zambia
There is little to see in Mfuwe other than the South Luangwa National Park. This town is a good place to come to organize tours, and as a departure point into the national park, but that's about it. Mfuwe is located in Zambia in the Eastern Province.
Flights to Mfuwe
While there is an airport near town, the Mfuwe Airport (airport code: MFU) only accepts charter tourism flights to Mfuwe. The roads are unreliable to Mfuwe, so your best option is to fly into Lilongwe, and book a charter flight to Mfuwe. In Lilongwe, the airport is the Kamuzu International Airport (code: LLW). Kenya Airways has a 1-stop flight to Lilongwe from the UK with a transfer in Nairobi, and Ethiopian Airlines goes through Addis Ababa. Egyptair has a 2-stop option, going to Cairo and then Nairobi.
Mfuwe Tourist Attractions
South Luangwa National Park
The main attraction around Mfuwe is the South Luangwa National Park. It’s a little more isolated than other Zambia wildlife parks so the animal populations are quite high, and this makes it a great place to go if you want to see a lot of animals during your safari tour.
Some of the animals you are likely to see at this location include hippos, zebra, elephants, buffalo, leopards, impala, crocodiles, lions, giraffes and several hundred species of birds. Many of these animals will congregate along the Luangwa River, taking advantage of the water in the otherwise very dry climate.
Depending on the tour group you are with, you will be able to take a jeep tour through the park or even a guided walk on foot. These tours will have their own lodges and accommodations within the park so you won't necessarily have to find a place to stay in Mfuwe yourself. Some of the tour camps have all the luxuries of home (electricity, laundry services and even internet access). Some are a little more rustic and offer a true camping experience.
South Luangwa National Park is somewhat unique that it is one of the few places that allows night safaris, which can provide a very interesting experience even if you've travelled in these areas during the day before.
Tribal Textiles
There is one nice little shop in Mfuwe if you are exploring around the village. They manufacture hand-painted fabrics in bold traditional Zambian designs and bright colours. You can purchase fabric or hand-made items made from their materials.
When Should You Visit Mfuwe?
You are going to find the weather hot in Mfuwe no matter when you go but some months are more reasonable than others. Late autumn between October and November should be avoided. During these months, the days will reach 36C (97F). Winter months are cooler but rainy, so you should try to see Mfuwe in either June or July. The weather is very dry, and the days are closer to 28C (82F).
The drier seasons are usually better for wildlife viewing because the animals are easier to find along the river. If you are in Mfuwe during the rainy months (December and January), there may not be as much wildlife to see during your safari.
