The Hwange National Park is the largest game park in Zimbabwe, and it’s located at the western end of the country, along the border with Botswana. Hwange National Park is one of the best places in Zimbabwe to take a wildlife safari.

Flights to Hwange National Park

The Hwange National Park Airport (airport code: HWN) is actually within the boundaries of the park, and there are flights to Hwange National Park but only with charter planes and tour companies. Travelling from the UK, if you want to get a flight to Hwange, you will have to arrive at the Harare International Airport (code: HRE) and arrange for further travel with a tour company. Air Kenya has flights to Harare that go via Nairobi, and Ethiopian Airlines makes a connection in Addis Ababa. Both Virgin Atlantic and South African Airways have stops in Johannesburg for another option.

The Landscape

Hwange National Park is on the edge of the Kalahari Desert, so you can guess that the environment is quite dry. Most of the landscape will be flat and scrubby brushland that is excellent for viewing animals when out in a vehicle.

Not far north, but outside the boundaries of the park are the Victoria Falls. As one of the largest waterfalls in the world, it is most definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. The landscape is much more green and lush in this area.

The Wildlife

As a game reserve, you can almost guarantee to see lots of animals while at Hwange National Park. There is a very large population of elephants in the park, and you will also likely see wild dogs, hyena, gemsbok, springhare, lions, buffalo, rhino and leopards. Generally there are more than 100 species of mammals found in the park, and more than 400 types of birds. There should be plenty to see no matter when you visit.

Getting to the Park

If you are driving to Hwange National Park on your own, the main road from Bulawayo (A8) will bring you to the north end of the park. It’s not a short drive but the 190 mile trip is on a well-paved road so it should not be too arduous a journey. Many tour groups will have transportation arranged from Bulawayo or a smaller town closer to the park such as Livingstone or Hwange.

Within Hwange National Park there are three permanent camp areas. The Main camp is near the main road that enters the park, and you can also get a little more remote with either the Sinamatella or Robins camps. The second one is the most remote and usually offers no supplies.

When Should You Visit Hwange National Park?

It is hot in the park for most of the year, with most daytime high temperatures reaching around 28C (82F). May through August is a little cooler, 22C (71F) and that is also the driest months of the year. That is generally the best time to visit the park though there may be less wildlife about with the lack of rain. However, there are some man-made watering areas which helps keep the animals nearby.
