The town of Victoria Falls is the main settlement on the Zimbabwean side of the wonderful Victoria Falls. Formerly this was the most popular destination for tourists visiting the falls, though Livingstone in Zambia has now become equally, if not more, popular than Victoria Falls.

Flights to Victoria Falls

From London, flights to Victoria Falls have either one or two connecting stops. You can get a 1-stop flight with South African Airways or Virgin Atlantic that transfers in Johannesburg. If you fly with Egyptair, you will make your connections in Cairo and then Johannesburg. Another 2-stop option is a flight to Victoria Falls with Lufthansa, travelling via Munich and Johannesburg. The Victoria Falls Airport (airport code: VFA) is about 12 miles (20km) outside of town. The average flight to Victoria Falls will be between 15 and 20 hours long.

Victoria Falls Tourist Attractions

The town of Victoria Falls was first settled in 1901 when the falls were being considered for their huge possibilities for generating hydro electric power. Luckily for us this never happened at the main falls themselves otherwise one of the world’s most spectacular natural attractions could have been ruined.

Victoria Falls town grew over the following years as it was connected to Zambia via the Victoria Falls Bridge, and the railway was extended to here also. Tourists flocked from around the world and the town had some real booms, becoming the main destination for tourists visiting the falls. There were more hotels and services here than in Zambia’s town of Livingstone, across the bridge, however due to political tensions in Zimbabwe the popularity of Victoria Falls town has declined and Livingstone is now the more popular of the two.

Don’t let this put you off altogether though as the area around Victoria Falls is considered to be quite safe for tourists, and with fewer tourists visiting you will likely find you can get a much better deal on hotel accommodation in the town!

The Falls

Obviously the main attraction of the town of Victoria Falls is the Falls themselves. These are the largest falls in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, sited where the Zambezi River drops 150 metres. The Falls are spectacular at any time of the year, and when deciding what time of year to come you need to consider whether you want to experience the thundering roar of water, or the slower fall of the dry season (see below for climate).

Victoria Falls Hotel

One of the grandest sites in the town is the Victoria Falls Hotel. This ‘Grand Old Lady of the Falls’, as it’s nicknamed is steeped in history and great for anyone looking to travel back in time. There are modern conveniences here but this is very much a heritage hotel and is very popular for afternoon tea if you can’t afford to stay overnight!

There are a number of other hotels in Victoria Falls town as well, including the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge, the Stanley and Livingstone, and the Kingdom.

When Should You Visit Victoria Falls?

There are arguments for and against visiting Victoria Falls in the wet season or the dry season, as the falls themselves are equally as spectacular either time. Summer is the rainy season, lasting from October to March and if you visit just after this you’ll catch the falls at their peak in April. Temperatures are a little less hot in the winter though with average highs in the mid to high 20’s C.
