Bali is the jewel in Indonesia’s crown! This beautiful island is located at the western end of the Lesser Sunda Islands, just east of Java, and is renowned for its scenic beauty, amazing diving and surfing, and colourful culture.

Flights to Bali

For a flight to Bali, you will arrive at the Ngurah Rai Airport (airport code: DPS) which is about 12.5 miles (20 kilometres) outside the city of Denpasar. There are taxis, and a public bus that will take you to downtown Denpasar in just under an hour, though this city is not one of the island’s top tourist destinations. Flights to Bali are common from the UK, and you can take your pick from nearly a dozen airlines. British Airways and Qantas both transfer once in Singapore, and Thai Airways stops in Bangkok. KLM offers a flight to Bali with 2 stops, in Amsterdam and then Singapore.

Bali Tourist Attractions

For many tourists Bali is a place to come to soak in the somewhat bohemian atmosphere of this beautiful island. Bali offers an excellent introduction to Indonesia’s culture, and the tropical scenery is the icing on the cake! There’s plenty you can do in Bali, depending on what you enjoy.

Diving and Surfing in Bali

Both diving and surfing are renowned in Bali. The waters around Indonesia as a whole are home to over 3,500 species so diving is usually a plentiful experience! There’s not just the marine life to enjoy when diving in Bali though. Dive sites such as at Tulamben Bay are very popular too. Here you’ll find the sunken ‘Liberty’, a US Army commissioned vessel, though there are several other excellent sites around Bali’s coast too.

In terms of diving, Bali has over 30 surfing spots, the most in Indonesia, and these are mainly located along the length of the southern coast.

Temples and Monuments in Bali

Along with the diving and surfing, Bali’s temples are renowned as there are many wonderful examples of Hindu architecture. There is plenty of opportunity to see temples across the island, but the most important Hindu temple is the Mother Temple of Besakih, on the slopes of Mount Agung. The temple is so special that it has been nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. More easily accessible is Uluwatu Temple on the Bukit Peninsula at the southern end of Bali, and the beautiful Tanah Lot temple in southern Bali.

Beach Resorts

All along the shores of Bali you’ll find some great beach resorts, each offering a little something different. For surfers, and visitors looking for a vibrant nightlife there is Kuta. This is the most developed part of Bali, so not ideal if you’re visiting for a quiet getaway or romantic honeymoon! A little way south of Kuta, Jimbaran is somewhat quieter and has some great seafood restaurants.

Seminyak is an upper scale area where there are some luxurious resorts and villas on the beachside. There are some designer clubs and restaurants here so you’re likely to find a different clientele to those around Kuta!

Ubud

Away from the beaches the town of Ubud, in central Bali, is also a popular destination. Set in the foothills this is a centre for arts, dance and culture and has some amazing places to visit such as the Elephant Cave, botanic gardens, bird park, monkey forest, temples and more.

When Should You Visit Bali?

Bali’s tropical climate means you can enjoy warm temperatures and high humidity across the year. Temperatures remain fairly constant as Bali is located close to the equator. This could mean visits to Bali are possible throughout the year, if it weren’t for the monsoon rains occurring roughly from June to September and December to March.
