Chittagong is the second largest city in Bangladesh and is the country’s main seaport. It’s located in the south east of the country and is one of Bangladesh’s main tourist destinations.

Flights to Chittagong

Flights to Chittagong arrive at the Shah Amanat International Airport (airport code: CGP), the second busiest airport in Bangladesh which is situated in nearby Patenga. You can get a flight to Chittagong from the UK with a good selection of airlines, all of which have two connections en-route. Jet Airways, Emirates, Virgin Atlantic Airways, British Airways, Thai Airways International, Qatar Airways, BMI, and Etihad Airways all have flights to Chittagong taking a variety of routes though all will have a second connection through Dhaka.

Chittagong Tourist Attractions

Despite being the second largest city in Bangladesh Chittagong actually features a number of scenic sights, both within and just outside the city, making this an attractive place to visit. Among the city’s main attractions are the following:

Chittagong Ethnological Museum

The only ethnological museum in Bangladesh is situated here in Chittagong and it features a very interesting collection focusing on the different ethnic groups of Bangladesh. The village mock-ups showing village life for different ethnicities are a popular part of the museum.

Another of Chittagong’s museums is the Zia Memorial Museum which commemorates the life of the late President Ziaur Rahman who was assassinated in 1981.

Patenga Beach

Patenga Beach is one of Chittagong’s most popular spots but it doesn’t attract visitors for the usual reasons. Swimming isn’t advised here, but it’s a scenic place to come and get away from the city especially at sunrise and sunset because both are said to be spectacular. There are restaurants and kiosks so you can stay for lunch or dinner.

Foy’s Lake

The man-made Foy’s Lake was created in 1924 and is again a picturesque place outside of the city centre. The lake can be enjoyed on boat rides, plus there are nice walking trails around it. The area has also been developed into a theme park with water rides, other rides, amusements and entertainment. Right next door to Foy’s Lake is Chittagong Zoo.

Shaheed Zia Memorial Complex and Mini Bangladesh

Another popular attraction is the heritage park at the Shaheed Zia Memorial Complex. This includes Mini Bangladesh which features replicas of all the major buildings in the country such as Lalbagh Fort. There’s also a tower that stands 71 metres high and has a revolving restaurant on the top.

When Should You Visit Chittagong?

Chittagong’s tropical monsoon climate means it’s best avoided during monsoon season, which actually covers the majority of the year, from April to October. This period also coincides with the hottest weather in the city when average high temperatures reach between 30 and 32C (86 and 90F), giving very hot and humid weather. If you’re coming to Chittagong for sightseeing you may want to restrict your visit to between November and March, which although does experience rainfall is much lower than the rest of the year. Temperatures during this time are still warm to hot, sitting between 26 and 31C.
