Jessore is the name of both a district and a town within that district in Bangladesh. It’s situated in south western Bangladesh and the district actually borders with India. This part of the country isn’t as famous as some others though there is a selection of things to see in Jessore.

The Jessore Airport (airport code: JSR) is a relatively small airport that’s shared with the Bangladesh Air Force and the only commercial flights to Jessore come from Dhaka with GMG Airlines and United Airways, so flights to Jessore from the UK will usually require two connections. The first leg of your flight to Jessore can be taken with a number of the world’s airlines including Jet Airways, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Virgin Atlantic Airways, British Airways, Thai Airways International Qantas Airays, BMI, Etihad Airways, Air New Zealand, and Cathay Pacific Airways.

Jessore Tourist Attractions

While Jessore town and district is not particularly considered to be a tourist destination there are a few things in the region to see and do if you happen to be passing through here on the way to somewhere else in Bangladesh. The people are friendly and there are several places to stay and restaurants to eat in, plus there’s a good market and shopping complex where you can buy all manner of goods if you need to stock up for an onward journey.

Things to see include the birthplace and former home of poet Michael Modhushudhon Dutta. The home is now a museum that’s dedicated to his life and makes a nice place to spend an hour or so, plus there are attractive grounds surrounding the home and museum.

If you enjoy temples then there are several places within Jessore district where you can visit temple complexes. One complex, at Bhatnagar, has the ruins of eleven temples which were all dedicated to Lord Shiv. Though now in ruins the complex is impressive all the same. Seventeen temples once stood in a complex by the village of Dhulgram. Now only one temple remains and it features beautiful terracotta designs plus you can visit the ruins of the other 16 temples that once stood here.

The Naldanga Temple Complex was the most restored of all these complexes in Jessore. It was originally built in 1656 and the government actually restored the six temples here back in the 1980s. Unfortunately they were razed again during a riot and once more stand in ruins. The government again has a restoration project ongoing.

When Should You Visit Jessore?

As with the rest of Bangladesh Jessore has a tropical climate with temperatures staying mild to hot throughout the year. There are basically three seasons: winter, summer and monsoon. Winters are mild and occur from October to March. The temperature increases in the summer and humidity goes up between March and June, then from June to October is the monsoon season when a huge amount of rain can fall. Monsoon seasons is not a good time to visit and if you don’t like hot and humid weather, the best time to visit Jessore is during the winter.
