On the banks of the River Padma, in the west of Bangladesh, Rajshahi is a large city with a history in the silk trade. In 2006, Rajshahi was actually voted the happiest city in the world by the World Happiness Survey.

Flights to Rajshahi

International flights to Rajshahi from the UK do not land in Rajshahi’s domestic airport, Shah Mokhdum Airport (airport code: RJH), so travellers will instead need to book a flight to the international airport in Dhaka (airport code: DAC). Flights to Dhaka are indirect with at least one stop offered by airlines such as Etihad Airways, Virgin Atlantic Airways, British Airways, Thai Airways International, Qantas Airways, and BMI. From Dhaka you can then book a flight to Rajshahi with Biman Bangladesh Airlines which offers daily flights.

Choto Sona Mosque

The 15-domed Choto Sona Mosque was built in the late 1400s, and was originally gilded in gold. Though the domes are no longer golden, the building is well-preserved and the walls are heavily decorated with carvings, making this an interesting and worthwhile place to visit.

Shahid Zia Park

The Shahid Zia Park is an amusement park for the whole family, with rides and food. There are roller coasters, a mono-rail, bumper cars, carousels and paddle boats. It also has a "mini Bangladesh" with replicas of the many important sites and buildings from around the country, great for a whistle-stop tour of Bangaldesh!

Shrine of Hazrat Shah Mokhdum

Hazrat Shah Mokhdum was the first preacher of Islam to come to the Rajshahi, and this is where he was buried.

Puthia Temples

Dedicated to the Hindu gods Krishna and Shiva, there are several temples in this complex which is located about 20 kilometres outside of the city to the east. Most are built with terracotta, in a mix of styles and architecture. The walls of the buildings are covered with intricate carvings and scrollwork though some are in a state of disrepair.

Somapura Mahivira

Somapura Mahivira is a large Buddhist monastery, built in 810. Its no longer used an active monastery, but you can tour through the many buildings that include temples, altars, shrines, monastic cells and walled courtyards. Over its long history, Jains and Hindus have also made use of the complex as well as Buddhists, creating a mix of architectural styles. `Today this is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Varendra Research Museum

A museum as well as a centre for research into the history of the region. There are many exhibits and displays of sculptures and artwork representing the many cultures that have been part of Rajshahi history. Stone inscriptions and carvings in Persian, Sanskrit, Bangla and Arabic are highlighted along with statues of the various Gods and Goddesses of Hindu. Admission is free.

When Should You Visit Rajshahi?

Bangladesh has a tropical climate and can be prone to monsoons during certain seasons. You can avoid the high heat and rain by not visiting Rajshahi between April and October. During these months, the temperatures can get to 36C (97F), though April and October are more around 30C (86F). It's comfortably warm during the winter months, making that the better time to plan your trip.
