Brunei is a small country in south east Asia situated on the island of Borneo and hence surrounded by Malaysia. Brunei is an attractive country which is becoming increasingly popular as an eco-tourism destination, though there’s more here than the scenery!

Brunei only has one airport which handles international flights and this is just outside the capital city, Bandar Seri Begawan. Brunei International Airport (airport code: BWN) has daily flights from the UK with a number of airlines offering one or two stop flights to Brunei. British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Singapore Airlines, Thai International Airways, Cathay Pacific and Malaysia Airlines all have one stop flights from London. Alternatively, KLM and Air Berlin offer two stop flights.

The Tourist Attractions of Brunei

Bandar Seri Begawan

The capital and largest city of Brunei is Bandar Seri Begawan, situated in the west of the country. Unlike many southeast Asian counterparts, Bandar is disappointingly thin on attractive architecture. One of the more interesting buildings though is the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, with typical mosque architecture including domes and towers. Two museums worthy of visiting include the Royal Regalia Museum and the Brunei Museum. The latter’s Islamic Art Gallery is said to be very good.

A short distance from the Brunei Museum you’ll find the tombs of two of Brunei’s sultans. The Tomb of Sharif Ali who was the third Sultan of Brunei and the Tomb of Sultan Bolkiah, the fifth Sultan of Brunei.

Along the river from Brunei is the water village, called Kampong Ayer in Bruneian. These villages sit on stilts in the water and are quite attractive. They are best visited by taking a water taxi from Bandar. The huge palace of the current Sultan of Brunei sits on a hill overlooking Kampong Ayer. This 300 acre palace, called Istana Nurul Iman, is the largest residential palace in the world.

Bangar

An area of Brunei, called the Temburong District, is completely separated from the main part of the country and lies to the east. This part of the country is far less developed than the main part and so presents tourists with better opportunities to see the more natural side to Brunei.

The main town in Temburong is Bangar which can be reached by way of a 45 minute speed boat ride from Bandar Seri Begawan! These run throughout the day and are very affordable. Considering the alternatives this is definitely the best way to get to this part of Brunei!

There is a good amount of untouched rainforest in this region of Brunei. The Ulu Temburong National Park is a great place to see some of this, and is located in a remote part of the Betu Apoi Forest Reserve.

You can hence only access Ulu Temburong by long boat, but this all adds to the experience! Make sure you try the Canopy Walkway which is set 50 metres above the forest floor and gives wonderful treetop views of the forest.

When Should You Visit Brunei?

Being located so close to the equator Brunei generally has an equatorial climate which means there is very little variation in the temperature across the year. You would think then that Brunei is good to visit at any time of the year, though this is not the case! There is actually quite a substantial difference across the country and several types of climate are experienced here so the dryer season in one part may not be the same as in another.
