Flights to Phnom Penh
Places in Cambodia
Phnom Penh is the capital and largest city of the south east Asian country of Cambodia. The city is an important tourist destination for the country, although some visitors may find it doesn’t hold quite the appeal they thought it would!
Flights to Phnom Penh International Airport (airport code: PNH) from the UK are available through a variety of the world’s major airlines. Travelling to Phnom Penh will be indirect with either one or two stops. Malaysia Airlines, Thai Airways International, Qantas Airways, British Airways, Korean Airlines, Virgin Atlantic Airways, and EVA Airways are among the various airlines that offer flights to Phnom Penh from the UK. Routes differ according to the airlines but some airlines fly via cities such as Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.
The Tourist Attractions of Phnom Penh
Phnom Penh won’t appeal to all visitors – it is a huge city of over 1 million people; it’s congested, polluted and very hot and compared to many other cities in south east Asia there aren’t really a huge number of attractions here. But these very points are what make Phnom Penh appeal to some visitors and it’s a chance to see how Cambodians live. Even if you’re visiting Cambodia with the chief purpose to go to places like Angkor, you should still spend a few days at least in Phnom Penh as after all this is where your flight will land.
The Royal Palace
By far the biggest attraction in Phnom Penh is the Royal Palace. This includes the fantastic palace buildings as well as the stunning grounds with pagodas. The palace was built in the 19th century and its best features are the Throne Hall, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha and the Silver Pagoda, and of course the nice grounds. The Royal Palace is best seen early morning as it closes between 11am and 2pm as this is the hottest time of the day. The afternoons tend to be busier. Legs and shoulders should be covered for admission though items are available for rental if you find you’ve forgotten to do this.
The National Museum
Just opposite the Royal Palace is the National Museum. This is best known for its collection of art from the time of Angkor and the large statue of King Jayavarman VII.
Sisowath Quay
The scenic boulevard on the banks of the Mekong and Tonle Sap is called Sisowath Quay though it’s often referred to as the Riverside. On the river side of the street is a park whilst the road is lined with cafés and shops. This is a popular area with tourists as you’ll find that the bars are of a better quality here.
Wat Phnom
Near to Sisowath Quay is Wat Phnom. This is a historically important temple, surrounded by green space which is a popular place for locals to get together. You’ll also see wild monkeys here and have the opportunity for an elephant ride!
Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum
Once a school, this building was converted into a notorious prison in 1975. 14,000 people suffered torture here before being sent to the Killing Fields (about 17km/10.6 miles from Phnom Penh). It’s not a pleasant place to visit but important to Cambodia’s recent past. You can also visit the actual Killing Fields.
