Once a small village, Siem Reap has grown into a large town because of its location as the gateway to Angkor, the major tourist attraction in this part of Cambodia.

Siem Reap Tourist Attractions

Siem Reap is best known as the gateway to fantastic Angkor Wat, and it’s this proximity to one of the world’s greatest archaeological sites that has meant the town has grown from a small village into the capital of the Siem Reap Province. There’s no doubt that the majority of tourists coming on a flight to Siem Reap will be arriving here to see Angkor Wat, but the town of Siem Reap does have a number of attractions worth staying on for.

Angkor National Museum

Before heading out to Angkor it’s worth visiting the Angkor National Museum in Siem Reap as it gives you a very good introduction to the archaeological site and the history of the area through Khmer history, civilisation and cultural heritage that is displayed across eight different galleries.

Cambodia Landmine Museum

While the Angkor National Museum focuses on the more ancient history the Cambodia Landmine Museum offers insight into Cambodia’s more recent history. Set up and run by a former Khmer Rouge child soldier the museum’s purpose is to educate both visitors and locals about the dangers of landmines.

Old French Quarter

Siem Reap’s Old French Quarter features both colonial and Chinese style architecture, making this an interesting part of the city to visit. There’s also the Old Market and around this part of the city you’ll find a more authentic Cambodian experience because the hotels and restaurants are not internationally owned chains as they mostly are on the roads in between the town and the airport.

Angkor Archaeological Park

Cambodia is very proud of Angkor Wat, featuring this amazing place on its national flag, and once you’ve visited you will clearly understand why. The huge site that contains Angkor Wat (Temple) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and in total covers an area of 400 square kilometres (250 sq miles). The temple is at the centre of the site, featuring its 5 towers of intricately carved work and thousands of carvings that depict Hindu mythology.

Angkor Thom is another major attraction of the site. This is the inner ancient royal city and inside there are sites such as the Elephant Terrace, the five entrance gates, and the Terrace of the Leper King. You’ll also find here the first temple mountain constructed in Angkor, Phnom Bakheng, which is reached via a half hour hike. The temple is impressive, as are the views.

When Should You Visit Siem Reap?

The coolest and driest time to visit is during the winter, from November to February, though this is also the busiest time. Between March and May it gets even hotter, then from May or June the rainy season begins, through to early November.
