The Huanghua International Airport (airport code: CSX) is a little distant from the city centre, but there is an expressway that connects the airport to the downtown. The drive is approximately 45 minutes long. For a 1-stop flight to Changsha from the UK there are two options: Air New Zealand and British Airways have a single transfer in Hong Kong before flying to Changsha. All other flights to Changsha have 2 connections in their routes including KLM and China Southern Airlines who both stop in Amsterdam, and then again in Beijing.
Changsha Tourist Attractions
Mount Yuelu
Just on the west bank of the river is Mount Yuelu, a place to go walking with lovely views and to see some of the old temples and pavilions around the hill. In particular, you will want to see the Lushan Temple, Aiwan Pavilion and the Taoist Yunlu Palace. The Qingfeng gorge is another photogenic spot.
Hunan Provincial Museum
Located on Dongfeng Road in Changsha, the Hunan Provincial Museum holds collections of relics and artefacts from many eras of China's history. There are paintings, bronzes, porcelains, and items unearthed from several important tombs in the area. The museum is open all year, but closed on Mondays (except for holiday Mondays) and admission is free for the main collection. Special exhibits may require a ticket fee.
Martyr's Park
If you are visiting the museum, you might as well plan to take a walk through the Martyr's Park since it is right next door. This is one of Changsha’s popular parks and it has nice manicured gardens as well as some amusement park rides for the kids. The park is free to enter, but you'll need to buy tickets for the carnival area.
Mount Hengshan
It's about 90 miles (150km) away from Changsha but Mount Hengshan should not be missed if you are in the area. Mount Hengshan is one of the sacred mountains of Buddhism, and is a beautiful spot where you can visit a number of temples. There is a charge to enter the area, and many buses will regularly go between Hengshan and Changsha.
Juzi Island
Juzi Island is in the Xiangjiang River, and there are beaches on either side for swimming or sunbathing. The island has a number of parks for walking, and there is a small wildlife park too. There are also some high-priced resorts, shops and restaurants where you can easily spend an entire day. There is a bridge over to the island from the mainland, and you should be able to walk to anything you want to see once you're there.
