Chengdu is a large city in central China that is thousands of years old, though is a busy modern city today. You'll find a unique mix of modern and historic sites when you tour the city.
Flights to Chengdu
Overseas flights to Chengdu come to the nearby Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (airport code: CTU), located 10 miles (16km) outside of the city centre. It's a large and extremely busy airport, handling several million passengers each year. You can get one-stop flights to Chengdu with either British Airways or Virgin Atlantic. They make their stops in Hong Kong and Shanghai, respectively. Flights to Chengdu are also available with China Southern Airlines and KLM both offer the same route, making connections in Amsterdam and then in Beijing.

Sichuan Science and Technology Museum
The Sichuan Science and Technology Museum has interactive displays with rockets, robotics and a lot more. Many of the exhibits focus on China's historic space programme, and there are 3D movie showings as well. You can find the museum in the center of Chengdu, and can't miss the huge statue of Mao in front.
Chengdu Zoo
North of the city is one of the largest zoos in China, with more than 250 different species of animals in large natural enclosures. In particular are the popular giant pandas. Even if you only go to see the pandas, there are more than 3,000 other animals to watch as well. For more pandas, you can visit the nearby Panda Research Station.
Jinli Ancient Street
The Old Street is a great tourist sight, and one of the oldest places in the city. It's bright and colourful, filled with hanging lanterns, lights and traditional Chinese decorations. You can shop for a wide range of souvenirs here, including the many handicrafts that Chengdu is famous for. Small clay statues and wonderfully embroidered fabrics stand out, though you can also get lots of great street food here too.
Wenshu Temple
The Wenshu Temple is a Buddhist monastery that is made up of 6 main halls filled with statuary and artwork from many periods of China's history. It's a beautiful and peaceful place, and one of the most popular tourist attractions in Chengdu.
Happy Valley Amusement Park
For something completely different visit the Happy Valley Amusement Park. This new amusement park is filled with state-of-the-art roller coasters and other thrill rides like the ferris wheel and a log flume ride. Smaller rides for the kids are available too, along with lots of food vendors and a few places to go swimming.
Mount Qincheng
A Taoism holy mountain, Mount Qincheng is a beautiful place to take a nature walk as well as see many ancient temples along the hillside. The buildings are very ornately decorated, and there are temples, statues, pavilions, bridges and small palaces to be found. Plan for a full afternoon here in order to see everything.
When Should You Visit Chengdu?
Summers are hot and humid, and prone to monsoon rainfalls so are not the best time for a tourist visit to Chengdu. July through August will see daytime temperatures at around 30C (86F). Winters are very cool, which makes the spring and autumn the most comfortable time to see Chengdu. April, May, September and October will average around 23C (74F) for ideal sightseeing comfort.
