Dalian is a major city in northeast China, located right on the coast. Dalian is important as a port city but it also has a thriving tourist industry due to the many attractions and beautiful beaches surrounding the city.

Flights to Dalian

Flights to Dalian will arrive at the new Dalian Zhoushuizi International Airport (airport code: DLC), a very busy airport that handles several million passengers each year. The only 1-stop flights to Dalian from the UK are with Virgin Atlantic and British Airways. They make their transfers in Beijing and Hong Kong, respectively. China South Airlines and KLM both have 2-stop options that travel through Amsterdam and then Beijing. Either way, most flights to Dalian will be between 15 and 20 hours long.

Dalian Tourist Attractions

Dalian Forest Zoo

The expansive Dalian Forest Zoo holds more than 1000 animals from 130 different species, including elephants, big cats, pandas, monkeys and more. The zoo is right within the city and many public buses can take you there. It’s surrounded by plenty of green space so you really don't feel that you're within a city at all, making this a nice escape from the bustling streets. The indoor rainforest adds a little extra wilderness to the zoo as well. There are some mountain areas within the zoo grounds and you can take a cable car from one side to the other.

Local Beaches

Along most of this peninsula's coast are beaches, which are one of the main tourist draws for Dalian. Xinghai Beach is the most popular (and usually the busiest) and Bangchuidao Beach is part of a private resort which makes it expensive. The casual tourist will do best at Fujiazhuang Beach for a quick swim. The beaches are clean, sandy, and have a great ocean view from any of them.

Russian Street

Russian Street is the place to go walking in Dalian if you enjoy seeing older architecture and different building styles. Part of the city was once under Russian control, and the area is still known this way today. Not only are there many examples of Eastern European style in the buildings, but you can find many unique shops and restaurants as well.

Shengya Aquarium

The Shengya Aquarium complex holds hundreds of species of fish as well as exhibits with model ships. There is a glass tunnel that will let you walk under the ocean for a more unique viewpoint of the sea. Tanks hold sharks, jellyfish and many other interesting creatures. Make sure you stay long enough for the dolphin show.

Scenic Squares

Dalian has many lovely squares across the city, each with something to see for the tourist. You should make a point of seeing Zhongshan Square for old Japanese architecture, and Renmin Square has a huge fountain.

When Should You Visit Dalian?

There are four distinct seasons in Dalian and none of the weather is too extreme throughout the year. The winter months of December through February will be around the freezing point during the day, but the rest of the year is quite suitable for travel. If you are heading to the beaches, you should come in July and August when it is the hottest, as it will reach 27C (81F) during those months. For more comfortable outdoor sight-seeing weather, come to Dalian in the spring or autumn.
