Destinations in China
Guangzhou is China’s third largest city and it is the capital of the Guangdong Province. Situated in the south of China, Guangzhou is not one of the better known tourist destinations in the country, yet it actually has a great deal of attractions to offer.
Flights to Guangzhou
The Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (airport code: CAN) is one of the busiest in China, and offers several options for flights to Guangzhou when coming from the UK. Guangzhou Tourist Attractions
Although it’s China’s third largest city Guangzhou isn’t nearly as well known as some of the other large cities in the country. Even so, it shouldn’t be overlooked if you’re looking for an authentic Chinese experience because there is plenty to see and do here. Among the landmarks and gardens, some of the most popular in Guangzhou include the following:
Sacred Heart Cathedral of Guangzhou
Guangzhou’s Sacred Heart Cathedral really looks quite out of place in a Chinese city where you expect to find ornate Chinese temples, but maybe it’s for this reason that the church is one of the major landmarks of Guangzhou. Situated in the heart of the old town, it’s a beautiful gothic revival church that was built in the 19th century and has had a somewhat tumultuous past, producing conflict among the locals.
Temple of the Six Banyan Trees
The Temple of the Six Banyan Trees is far more like the architecture you would expect to find in Guangzhou. This towering Buddhist temple originally dates from 537, so it’s an ancient religious monument though the actual structure has been burnt and rebuilt several times with the latest one dating from 1373. The temple was restored in 1900 but before this time it was in ruins.
Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall
The Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall is a beautiful building set within gardens that was built to commemorate Sun Yat-Sen, the founding father of the Republic of China. The hall took two years to complete, between 1929 and 1931 and can hold over 3,200 people. The gardens are very pleasant to walk around and you can go inside the hall for an entrance fee.
Canton Tower
One of the most modern constructions in Guangzhou is the Canton Tower. This vast tower is the tallest in China, and for a short period held the title of the tallest completed tower in the world before the Tokyo Sky Tree overtook it. This is by far the best place to get views over Guangzhou and the surrounds as it reaches a dizzying height of 600 metres and has a restaurant and observation deck to admire the views from.
Yeuxiu Park
There are numerous parks and gardens in Guangzhou and Yeuxiu Park stands out because it is the largest urban park in China. It takes up a huge area and includes large green open spaces and a couple of lakes. Inside the park is one of Guangzhou’s museums, the City Museum.
When Should You Visit Guangzhou?
Guangzhou has a humid subtropical climate so it stays warm to hot all year round. Summers are hit and humid, receiving most of the annual rainfall between April and September, peaking in May and June. This makes autumn and winter a better time to visit as temperatures are still warm – average high around 18C.
