Hong Kong is a lively and cosmpolitian city on the south east coast of China. Up until 1997, it was governed by the UK and therefore has many modern and western influences. Hong Kong is ideal for shopping and signet seeing as well as eating tasty food that is both authentic and palatable for the western tongue. It is also a great place for experiencing culture and if you like a punt, there are plenty of casinos, especially on the neighbouring island of Macau.

Flights

Hong Kong is a popular destination so is fairly easy to get to from the UK. You can fly direct from Manchester and Heathrow but also use other destinations to get there. Airplanes that fly to Hong Kong include Air China, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, Japan Airlines, Lufthansa, Quantas, Singapore Airlines, Virgin and more. With so many flights, prices are very competitive throughout the year; search online for the best deals. The summer months when children are on holiday and the end of January/ Early February can be more expensive because of Chinese New Year and many people are trying to get into the country for celebrations. Entry into Hong Kong is fine with a valid British Passport, although not as easy as it once was when the UK governed the country.

Climate

Hong Kong’s climate is sub-tropical which means that it is mild most of the time although there are hot spells in the summer from May to August. It can be very humid during this period and there are days when the pollution is overwhelming in the city and a layer of smog seems to cover it. March and April have few showers and it is pleasantly warm. November and December are breezier and the temperatures are cooler although the temperature is usually around 0-10 degrees Celsius. Sometimes there can be tropical cyclones or monsoon winds or storms from April to September which can affect flights, although this is rare.

What to do

Kowloon is the central hub of Hong Kong and there on Nathan road you can go shopping and eat lots of food cheaply. In Hong Kong you can go to upmarket restaurants or you can go to Dai Pai Dong’s – cheap and fast outside eating places where you can get a main course for £2. In Kowloon is Ladies Market, a long road full of stalls; you can buy nearly anything from this market, from clothes, to accessories, watches, gadgets, electronics, shoes, home ware, toys etc. Haggling is an absolute must as tourists are always charged a little more.

In Hong Kong you can very easy to travel around because of the MTR system which is like a tram system that is clean and reliable. Try visiting various stops; the stop on Lantau Island holds a sacred giant bronze Buddha that you have to walk up steep stairs to get to. Ther are lots of fun parks and activity centres too to visit, such as Disneyland and Ocean Park – like amusment parks in England but with more wildlife and walking areas.
