The Lukou International Airport (airport code: NKG) is located 22 miles (35km) outside the city and is linked to the city via public buses or taxis. For a longer route, China Southern Airlines has a flight to Nanking that stops in Amsterdam as well as Beijing.

Nanjing Tourist Attractions

Whether you know the city as Nanjing or Nanking it does not matter as both names are frequently used, though Nanjing is the international standard spelling of the city. Nanjing is a historically important city as it has served as the capital of China in the past and is listed as one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China. You can’t get much older than this when it comes to cities, as Nanking was settled in 495 BC! Today it is a huge city with a population of more than 7.7 million people and the culture and attractions to go with it. Among the many things to see and do in Nanjing are the following:

Museums in Nanjing

In line with its long history Nanjing has many excellent museums including some of the oldest and best in China. The Nanjing Museum is one, and it’s one of the top museums in the country. It features eleven halls covering many different periods and with plenty of ancient artefacts.

The Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall is a memorial and museum rolled into one that remembers the many thousands of Chinese who were slaughtered by the Japanese during World War 2, while there are several other museums covering a broader range of historical events such as the City Museum of Nanjing, the Taiping Kingdom History Museum, and the Nanjing City Wall Cultural Museum.

The Presidential Palace

The Presidential Palace of Nanjing also features one of the city’s museums; the China Modern History Museum, but the Presidential Palace itself is obviously a tourist attraction as well. The huge palace was once the Office of the President of the Republic of China.

Nanjing’s Temples

If you enjoy admiring the beautiful architecture of China’s many different temples then Nanjing is a good place to come. There are a number of temples here including the Confucius Temple. Now more a museum than anything else, much of the temple’s site is now taken up by a huge market which is itself a tourist attraction. Other temples in Nanjing include the towering Linggu Temple, Jiming Temple, and Qixia Temple.

Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum

Nanjing is also a city that contains several mausoleums of which Sun Yat-sen is the best known. It is situated on Purple Mountain amidst beautiful surroundings, and despite the inevitable crowds it’s still a very serene place. A major feature is the 392 steps that lead to the vault.

When Should You Visit Nanjing?

Nanjing has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid and wet summers so this perhaps isn’t the best time to visit. Temperatures peak in July and August with an average high of just below 32C. Spring and autumn may be better with warm temperatures, while winters are cool.
