Situated in southern China, the city of Shenzhen is a major metropolis that’s home to millions of people. It’s skyscraper skyline shows the wealth of this city which is said to be one of the fastest growing in the world, yet there are still cultural and scenic attractions for any visiting tourists to enjoy.
Flights to Shenzhen
The local airport is about 22 miles outside of the city and there are regular buses for transit. Flights to Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport (airport code: SZX) are limited when travelling fro the UK, but are available on a few major airlines. Virgin Atlantic has the only one-stop flight to Shenzhen, stopping in Shanghai. China Southern Airlines has a route through Amsterdam and then also Shanghai, and KLM stops in Amsterdam but also in Beijing. Most flights to Shenzhen are just under 20 hours long.

Amusement Parks in Shenzhen
Among Chinese tourists Shenzhen is best known as a city of theme parks. There are more theme parks here than most tourists have time to visit, and the Chinese usually visit specifically for these attractions. Some are better than others are some are far tackier than others, so you may want to choose which one or two you go to wisely.
Window of the World is one of the less tacky ones, and as the name suggests this amusement park provides windows into different countries of the world. There’s a scale duplicate of the Eiffel Tower that can be climbed, the Grand Canyon, the Taj Mahal and more to see, and the evening dance shows, with parade and fireworks are renowned.
A similar attraction but one that focuses on China itself can be found at Splendid China where there are miniature recreations of some of China’s best known landmarks and features. Adjacent is the China Folk Culture Village where you can visit villages that represent 56 of China’s ethnic groups.
Museums in Shenzhen
If the exhibits of the Culture Village have sparked your interest there are numerous museums in Shenzhen that you can visit to find out more about the culture and heritage of Shenzhen. The Shenzhen Museum has a good overview with changing exhibits relating to this history of China, while art can be seen at the Shenzhen Art Museum, He Xiangning Art Museum, and the Guan Shan Yue Art Gallery.
Shenzhen’s Beaches
Shenzhen isn’t just a bustling metropolis, it’s also a popular beach and resort holiday destination. Xichong Beach is particularly popular.
Wutong Mountain National Park
And, outside of Shenzhen there is some fabulous scenery such as the Wutong Mountain National Park. Hiking in the mountains is very popular and if you reach the summit at around 900 metres you will enjoy wonderful views. There are relatively easy hikes up to the top, though it will take a good 5 hours to get to the top and back.
When Should You Visit Shenzhen?
Shenzhen has subtropical weather with a rainy season that picks up from April until October. During this time temperatures are highest, peaking with an average high around 32C in July and August, making it hot and sticky. There is still rainfall over the winter months but significantly less and temperature remain warm, making this a good time for sightseeing. The average high in January is just under 20C.
