Jakarta is the bustling capital and largest city of Indonesia and is located on the north west coast of the island of Java. This ancient city is full of contrasts between the rich and poor which can be a real eye-opener for some visitors but despite the downsides, Jakarta has a great deal of attractions to see.

International flights are welcomed in the Soekarno Hatta International Airport (airport code: JKT), located 12 miles outside the city. Flights to Jakarta from the UK are indirect and offered by numerous major world airlines. Choose from Emirates, Etihad, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways, Malaysia Airlines, KLM, Thai Airways International, Singapore Airlines, Virgin Atlantic Airways, British Airways, and Qantas Airways, who all offer flights to Jakarta from the UK with one connection. Flight routes differ with the airlines, for example, Emirates flies via Dubai while Qatar Airways via Doha.

Jakarta Tourist Attractions

Museums

Jakarta has a varied range of museums which give visitors an insight into the history of the city and its people. Not all will be of interest to everyone but examples include the Museum Bank Mandiri in the Old Town. This museum looks back at banking during the Dutch colonial era. Keeping with the Dutch colonial theme, the Maritime Museum features restored Dutch warehouses from the time of the Dutch East Indies trading company, plus the fish market here is a bustling place to get a feel for everyday life in Jakarta.

Probably of most interest when it comes to museums in Jakarta is the National Museum which has been in operation since 1868. The large collections here include artefacts dating back as far as prehistoric times.

National Monument

The Tugu Monas, or National Monument, is one of the city’s most popular attractions and is its most famous landmark. This tall monument is at the centre of the Merdeka (Freedom) Square and is reminiscent of the Washington Monument in the USA with reflecting pool in front. Standing at 137 metres high it has great views of the city from the observation deck, and in the basement visitors can learn more about Indonesia’s history.

Presidential Palace

The Presidential Palace, situated to the north of the National Monument, is also impressive. This is the official residence of the president of Indonesia and if you visit at the weekend it is open (and free) to the public.

Taman Mini Indonesia Indah

If you’re visiting Indonesia and don’t have time to explore its 30 provinces in detail, a visit to this attraction is the next best thing! Meaning ‘Beautiful Indonesia Little Park’ it displays all 30 provinces and features highlights of over 250 of the country’s cultures.

Istiqlal Mosque

Another of Jakarta’s impressive landmarks is the Istiqlal Mosque. This huge mosque is the largest in south east Asia and can hold over 120,000 at one time. Although not the most attractive of the world’s mosques it is impressive all the same.

When Should You Visit Jakarta?

With its location close to the equator, Jakarta has an equatorial/tropical climate and is hot and humid throughout the year. Rainfall is possible throughout the year though by far the wettest month is January and the driest August. The temperature does not vary hugely across the year with a daily temperature range of between 25 and 38C (77 to 100F).
