Lombok is an island in Indonesia and is part of the Lesser Sunda Islands. It’s close by to Bali but as yet hasn’t had the same tourist boom as Bali has in past years. This gives tourists the chance to discover the unspoilt island of Lombok before tourism really takes a hold.

Flights to Lombok and the city of Mataran are served by the Selaparang Airport (airport code: AMI), though a new international airport is being built for the island. All flights to Lombok from the UK have 2 connections, and there are only a few choices. Virgin Atlantic and British Airways both travel through Singapore and Jakarta, and Emirates Airlines connects in Dubai and Kuala Lumpur. Your other choice is with Malaysia Airlines, and their flight to Lombok has connections in Amsterdam and Kuala Lumpur.

Lombok Tourist Attractions

While neighbouring Bali is a wonderful place and hugely popular tourist destination some visitors find that it’s become just a little over commercialised and too full of tourists and hotels. If you want to visit an island like Bali but without so many of the tourists then Lombok is a great alternative.

The island of Lombok is only 5 miles from Bali but the two could actually be a world apart for their differences. Lombok has tons of natural beauty to discover and a more laid back atmosphere to the hustle and bustle of Bali. There are tourist resorts on Lombok so tourists will find there are still plenty of places to stay here. The main tourist centre is Senggigi. This is north of the capital of the island, Mataram, and spreads along the coast for many miles. This was going to be the next Bali until troubles in the early 2000’s, but when visitor numbers went down many building projects were stopped. Tourists numbers to Lombok are now on the rise again, and that’s why now would be a great time to visit before all those construction projects start up and Lombok becomes the next Bali.

The beaches along the Senggigi strip are lovely and there are services to go along with the hotels and resorts. With everything you need here, Senggigi makes an excellent base for visitors to Lombok, allowing them to explore some of the rest of the island.

If you’re rather enjoy a quieter location there are several other smaller resorts on Lombok too. Places like Sekotong which is off the beaten path, but slowly but surely being discovered. Tanjung is another and it’s home to some of Lombok’s top resorts.

Wherever you stay if you enjoy surfing you’ll want to visit Kuta. This surfing mecca may have the same name as a place on Bali that’s famous for surfing, but it’s a much quieter destination. The Gili Islands are a relatively quiet destination too and are very popular with touring backpackers.

I the centre of Lombok is the stratovolcano Mount Rinjani which features a crater lake and is encompassed within the Gunung Rinjani National Park.

If you want to experience a bit of city life than head to the capital of Lombok, and the largest city on the island, Mataran. There are several attractions here including gardens, parks and monuments plus opportunities for shopping.

When Should You Visit Lombok?

As Lombok is located close to the equator the temperatures remain fairly high and constant across the year with high humidity always playing a part. You’ll probably want to avoid the monsoon rains though, occurring between June and September and December to March.
