Flights to Akita

When coming from London, there are limited flights to Akita. In fact, only Delta Airlines has a flight to Akita Airport (airport code: AXT). There are 2 connections, in New York and Seoul. You'll have more options if you fly into Seoul's Incheon Airport (code: ICN), and then get a flight to Akita with Korean Air. KLM offers a 1-stop flight to Seoul that connects in Amsterdam, and Lufthansa stops in Munich.

Akita Tourist Attractions

Akita Prefectural Museum

A museum of both science and history, the Akita Prefectural Museum offers many interactive and hands-on exhibits. Make sure to see the Old Nara family home, just off the main museum grounds. It's 250 years old, and shows how farmers lived during the Edo period. The museum is free to enter, and they are closed on Mondays.

Senshu Park

See the spring cherry blossoms at Senshu Park, as well as the ruins of Kubota Castle. It's a lovely park to just go walking in, to relax and unwind. The park also has a teahouse, shrines and a watchtower. The reconstructed watchtower has a small museum inside, documenting the 100 history of Akita.

Senshu Museum of Art

The Senshu Museum of Art showcases both local and international artworks, in various classical styles as well as modern art. The museum is open from 10am until 6pm, and there is an admission fee.

Round One

This is an indoor games facility with an arcade, batting cages, ping-pong, roller skating and basketball. At Round One you pay for a certain amount of time, and you can play whatever you want while you're there. It's about 1,800 yen for a 3-hour stay. Plan to go any time, as they are open 24 hours a day.

Kakunodate

Kakunodate is a historical samurai town about an hour away from Akita, and a very popular spot for a day trip. Though it is still called a castle town, the old Kakunodate is no longer standing. The biggest draw is the cherry blossoms. There are hundreds of weeping cherry trees that bloom in April and May each year. It's quite a sight. The town also has a number of old historic buildings, particularly the 6 samurai homes that are open to the public.

Omoriyama Zoo

Located in Omoriyama Park, the zoo has a mix of animal exhibits from around the world as well as a petting zoo for the kids. They are open through the week, except for January and February when they are open only on the weekends.

When Should You Visit Akita?

The weather in Akita is very diverse between summer and winter, so you will see a big difference in your trip depending on which month you go. Winters are cold, hovering around the freezing point during the day between December and February. There is also a lot of snow during those months. August is the hottest month with highs of 29C (84F) but July is only about 2 degrees cooler. Given the high humidity in the summers, the most comfortable times to visit would be May and June, and then again in October and November.
