For a relatively small country Japan has a huge population, the majority of which are focused around the cities such as the capital, Tokyo. So although there are many people here, Japan still retains a certain emptiness which gives visitors the best of both worlds.

Japan is an archipelagic country consisting of over 3,000 islands. The islands are well linked by flights and the main islands also have excellent rail services (the ‘Bullet’!) from city to city. Most visitors coming to Japan will enter via one of two international airports – Tokyo Narita International (airport code: NRT) near Tokyo, or Kansai International Airport (airport code: KIX) near Osaka.

Flights from London to Japan’s Narita airport are available with an immense choice of airlines. From London Heathrow direct flights are offered with British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, All Nippon Airways and Aeroflot. Many other airlines offer one stop flights, including Swiss via Zurich, Lufthansa via Munich, Singapore Airlines via Singapore, KLM via Amsterdam and Air France via Paris.

The Tourist Attractions of Japan

With 3,000 islands making up Japan there’s a lot to see here! However, many visitors are attracted to several of the more popular places and concentrate their time there rather than trying to see too much. The most popular attractions and destinations are as follows:

Tokyo

The capital of Japan and largest city, Tokyo is actually the largest metropolitan area in the world, with a staggering population in excess of 30 million! But despite the crowds, Tokyo is a very likeable city where people go about their business, transport is ultra-efficient and everything just seems to work well! It’s this ultra efficiency and futuristic ambiance which makes Tokyo so popular.

The Shinjuku area of Tokyo is where you’ll find the largest concentration of skyscrapers and some excellent attractions too. Shinjuku Gyoen is the Shinjuku Imperial Gardens; beautiful gardens, particularly famed for their cherry blossoms at the right time of year! And the Tokyo Metropolitan Government building is popular too, with its observation room on the 45th floor this makes an excellent place from which to view Tokyo, and, on a clear day, Mount Fuji.

Mount Fuji

Mount Fuji adorns countless pictures of Japan, and is certainly very photogenic. What makes it so attractive is the flawlessly entirely completely symmetrical volcanic cone at the peak of the mountain, and when half covered with snow it’s picture perfect!

This is the highest mountain in Japan and is surrounded by the huge Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. Hiking and climbing are very popular here, though unless you’re experienced at climbing you’re probably better off admiring Mount Fuji from afar!

Kyoto

The ancient capital of Japan, Kyoto, avoided the worst of the bombings in World War 2 and as a result many of the historic buildings still remain. Although there are historic districts in Tokyo, Kyoto (and nearby Nara) are much better examples for visitors. This is said to be the most beautiful city in Japan, and it’s the parks and ancient Buddhist temples which make it so.

Nara

Nara may not attract as many visitors as Kyoto, but in reality this historic city probably has more to offer. The Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara combine to form a UNESCO World Heritage listed Site – consisting of eight temples and shrines plus the Kasugayama Primeval Forest.

When Should You Visit Japan?

Spring is probably one of the best times to visit Japan as the weather is pleasant and you should be able to see many of the cherry blossoms which Japan is so famous for.

Although the summer may be the most popular time for most tourists, summers start rainy and then become very hot and humid, so aren’t actually ideal sightseeing conditions!
