Kyoto is a city in Japan and it’s situated in the central region of the main island, Honshu. Formerly the imperial capital of Japan this city has many beautiful and outstanding shrines, and a large collection of other tourist attractions.

Flights to Kyoto

Even though Kyoto is a large and popular city, it does not have an airport of its own. For flights to Kyoto, most travelers arrive at the Kansai International Airport (airport code: KIX) outside of Osaka. You can take the train from Kansai to Kyoto, which will take just over an hour. Make sure to show your passport as tourists get a better rate. You can choose from more than a dozen airlines for your flight to Kyoto from the UK, all with one connection. Air China connects in Beijing, KLM in Amsterdam, and Japan Airlines goes through Tokyo.

Kyoto Tourist Attractions

Kyoto, along with the neighbouring cities of Uji and Otsu, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994. The fact that around 20% of Japan’s National Treasures, and 14% of its Important Cultural Properties are situated within Kyoto is testament to the fact that Kyoto has a lot to offer.

Though this is often declared to be on the most beautiful cities in the world, as someone who’s just arrived in Kyoto you may find this heard to believe! The city does have a modern side, where concrete and skyscrapers make it first appear ugly, but if you know where to look you’ll find the city’s great beauty. Some of the major sights to seek out are:

14 World Heritage Sites

Scattered through all quarters of the city are Kyoto’s 14 World Heritage Sites, each as wonderful as the next. There’s the huge Nijo Castle for example, with its two palaces and peaceful gardens, while at the other end of the spectrum is the Omuro Buddhist temple, Kozan-ji. The striking reds of the Shimogamo Shrine make this a popular Kyoto attraction, while Saiho-ji, a Rinzai Zen Buddhist temple, is famous for its serene moss gardens.

The Imperial Palaces and Villas

Kyoto is home to four Imperial Palaces and Villas which are still to this day occasionally used for official state functions. Although each of these four is open for public tours you have to arrange your visit in advance through the Imperial Household Agency. This does put some visitors off, but if you can be bothered with the procedure your visit will be worthwhile.

Kyoto Museums

Kyoto has many fine museums too. The Kyoto National Museum for example is housed within an impressive building, constructed for the sole purpose of being the museum. It focuses on pre-modern Japanese and Asian art. If you’re interested in art there are several other art museums in Kyoto too, including the National Museum of Modern Art Kyoto, and the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art.

Kyoto Botanical Garden

The Kyoto Botanical Garden gives visitors to the city the chance to see a range of different themed Japanese gardens that include about 120,000 different plants from 12,000 species. Gardens include Cherry Trees, Japanese Iris Garden, a Bamboo Garden, Bonzai Exhibit, and Lotus Pond, plus there are large conservatory that has numerous themed rooms representing 25,000 plants from 4,500 species.

When Should You Visit Kyoto?

Winters are quite cold in Kyoto, so not the best time for outdoor sightseeing. Summers are hot, and so could be a little uncomfortable for some visitors, while spring and autumn hold several advantages – the weather is cool to mild and in the spring you’ll enjoy blossoming trees, while in the winter you can enjoy fall colours.
