Destinations in Japan
Situated on the island of Hokkaido in northern Japan, the city of Sapporo is the fourth largest in the country, and the largest on the island. Sapporo is famous for several things – Sapporo Beer, and for the annual Sapporo Snow Festival.
Flights to Sapporo
There are two airports serving Sapporo: The Okadama Airport (airport code: OKD) which have local flights to Sapporo only, and the larger New Chitose Airport (code: CTS) that handles international air traffic. The airport code was SPK, and is still sometimes coded that way in online booking engines. There is a bus and rapid rail service into Sapporo from the airport. Virgin Atlantic and British Airways both have flights to Sapporo with stops in Singapore and Tokyo. An alternative is with Thai Airways International, and a flight to Sapporo with them connects in Bangkok and then in Tokyo.
Sapporo Tourist Attractions
Sapporo is quite a new city and as such it does lack some of the historical charm and typical Japanese architecture that tourists will find in other cities in Japan, but this shouldn’t put you off visiting, as it’s still a very attractive city with plenty to see and do.
Sapporo TV Tower
Sapporo’s TV Tower is one of the major landmarks of the city. It’s certainly not the most attractive tower you’ll ever see; looking like a cross between the Eiffel Tower and the Blackpool Tower, but it’s a popular attraction all the same thanks to the observation deck. The tower was built in 1957 and stands 147 metres high, with an observation deck at a height of 90 metres. There are lovely views from the deck over Odori Park and out towards Mount Okura.
For another view of the city there’s also an observation deck at the Sapporo JR Tower, which does stand higher then the TV Tower.
Sapporo Beer Museum
If you’re a beer lover then you’ll probably want to visit the Sapporo Beer Museum. The building it’s housed in was actually the home of the sugar company but it became the beer museum in 1987. Entrance to the museum is free and you can visit three floors of exhibits or have a guided tour. Of course there is also a bar where you try out the various beers produced by Sapporo!
Sapporo Snow Festival
As well as the beer Sapporo is also famous for its annual Snow Festival, which attracts around 2 million visitors. It takes place in February over the course of a week, and features beautiful ice sculptures and snow statues, totalling about 400, and the views over the statues in Odori Park is wonderful from the TV Tower.
Mount Moiwa
Overlooking Sapporo is Mount Moiwa, and there are several reasons to make the trip up this mountain. There’s a cable car that can transport you there, providing excellent views along the way, and once you reach the top the views of Sapporo are fabulous. It’s particularly impressive at night with all the city lights glowing. There is also a ski resort up the mountain that you can visit during the winter.
When Should You Visit Sapporo?
Coming in the winter does have several advantages i.e. the Snow Festival and skiing, but it is quite cold with an average high below freezing in January and February. In contrast summers are warm and humid, peaking in July and August when the average high is 25 and 26C respectively. Late spring and early autumn are mild too, though spring has lower rainfall.
