Destinations in Japan
Sendai is a large city located on the east coast of Japan, with suburbs on the coast, and the city centre situated inland. Sendai is the largest city in the region and although it doesn’t have some of the historical appeal that other Japanese cities do, Sendai still does have a number of tourist attractions.
Flights to Sendai
The Sendai Airport (airport code: SDJ) isn't actually in Sendai, but rather in the town of Natori which is 9 miles away. There is a rail link from the airport into the Sendai train station but no public buses. Flights to Sendai from the UK have 2 stops, with each airline going a different route. Lufthansa has connections in Munich and Tokyo, and flights to Sendai with KLM travel through Amsterdam and Kansai. Austrian Airlines has stops in Vienna and Tokyo for another choice.
Sendai Tourist Attractions
Sendai Castle
Although only in ruins, Sendai Castle is one of the major landmarks of Sendai and its hillside position means visitors can enjoy some great views over Sendai from it. It’s also known as Aoba Castle, so don’t get confused by the inter-changeable names! The main feature of the castle is the recreated gate and statue of Masamune Date. The castle was built by the Date family; a family that was very influential and wealthy in the late 16th century.
Sendai Museums
Sendai has a number of museums and of these the Sendai City Museum is the main one. It has numerous artefacts relating to the Date family, as well as the general history of the city.
If you’re interested in history then you can discover the much earlier history of Sendai at the Museum of the Forest of the Depths of Earth which focuses on the 20,000 year old Stone Age ruins that were unearthed. Sendai also has an art museum, the Miyagi Museum of Art.
Osaki Hachiman Shrine
A national treasure of Japan, and popular tourist attraction, is the Osaki Hachiman Shrine. This beautiful shrine was built between 1604 and 1607 by Masamune Date and is the oldest remaining structure of this kind of architecture, Azuchi-Momoyama architecture.
Natural Attractions
Sendai is a large city but it does contain natural attractions and some very scenic areas. There are several hot spring resorts here for example. In the spring the city’s cherry blossoms are particularly beautiful, and in the autumn the autumn colours are equally as attractive. There are several waterfalls around Sendai, including one that is often said to be within the top three waterfalls of Japan, Akiu Otaki Falls. In the Futakuchi Gorge there are a few waterfalls that have been designated as natural monuments of the country.
When Should You Visit Sendai?
Summer isn’t a very good time to visit Sendai as it’s the wettest time of year, and hence not particularly sunny, but it is the warmest – the average high in August is 28C. With less rainfall and far more sunshine, spring is probably the best time to visit; May has an average high of 19.5C. Winters are quite cool in contrast and always experience snow. January is the coldest month with an average high of 5C.
